Top Super Mario Bros. speedrunner notches another world record

The speedrunner Kosmic held, for about a month, a triple crown of sorts in Super Mario Bros. — world records in Any%, Warpless and the Minus World Ending. Knocked from first place in the Minus World 11 days ago, he turned his attention to another category in the five major ones on Speedrun.com: Super Mario Bros. in Super Mario All Stars, the 1993 compilation for Super Nintendo. And he claimed a world record in that on Friday.

As a speedrun, Super Mario Bros. in Super Mario All Stars is intriguing because, while a completely separate game, its runs are filed under the NES original because it’s effectively a remaster of the original. There are some differences, however, that make it a distinct and slightly slower run.

Record Super Mario Odyssey speedrun shortened to a more viewable time

This week saw the latest in a string of speedrun world records set for Super Mario Odyssey, which in less than six months has become the second-most popular game all-time on Speedrun.com, for the number of runs recorded. The problem with the moment is, well, it’s an hour long.

Redditor gabriel3374 has done speedrunning fandom a favor, however, by condensing the video of NicroVeda’s 1:03:19 run down to its most relevant visual portions. That shortens the whole thing to a much more manageable 33:33 supercut.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on Xbox One gets Miramar in May

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on Xbox One will get the Miramar map in May, game director Brendan Greene said during a panel at PAX East this afternoon.

It was the only real piece of news in a panel that was otherwise a rollicking celebrity play-through of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds featuring Joel Zimmerman, the electronic music artist known as deadmau5, wearing a 15-pound PUBG-themed helmet.

The Blackout Club sounds like Stranger Things — and that’s fine with its studio

Jordan Thomas doesn’t take this the wrong way when you ask him not to take this the wrong way. Buuuuuut the next game his studio is working on — a group of teens working together to unwind the paranormal mystery of their insular small town — kinda sorta sounds like maybe a riff on Stranger Things?

“If that’s the reason they remember us, I have no problem with that whatsoever,” Thomas, a co-founder of the studio Question, said cheerfully. “The first minute they play it, they may find something that draws on the familiar teens-versus-monsters genre. But from there it goes to a place they’ve never been before, where the familiar falls away.”

Final Fantasy 15 has four more episodes coming in 2019

Square Enix is nowhere near being done with Final Fantasy 15. During a panel at PAX East today (ostensibly about the Windows PC version of the game and mods), Square Enix outlined its roadmap for additional Final Fantasy 15 content.

That plan includes at least two more updates for Comrades, Final Fantasy 15’s online multiplayer mode. The first content update will hit sometime this summer, around the time that Square Enix also plans to release a stand-alone version of Comrades. The mode’s second update will hit in winter 2018.

World of Warcraft’s new Island Expeditions are a mix of classic dungeons and Diablo rifts

There’s something special about repeatable content in World of Warcraft. The dungeons and raids that we’ve always known are played hundreds of times by each player over the course of the expansion, and they’re expected to be fun and interesting each time.

Diablo 3 trades out the handcrafted experience of dungeons for a more random option in its Rifts. Not every Rift is great, but the potential for fun is always extremely high. Battle for Azeroth, WoW’s seventh expansion, aims to combine the best of both worlds with the brand-new Island Expeditions feature.

How a game is seeking to change the minds of politicians

On the whole, politicians care deeply about how they are portrayed on television news and in newspaper columns. They worry about snarky cartoonists and satirists who pick apart their words and deeds. But they don’t care much about how they come across in video games, which are viewed as shallow stuff for kids.

As games become more powerful mediums of expression, that state of affairs is likely to change, albeit slowly.

The SNK 40th Anniversary Collection will include at least 13 titles, some of which have both arcade and console versions. In publisher NIS America’s announcement, the company said more titles are to come, but here’s what’s confirmed so far:
