PUBG’s new event mode is team deathmatch-style

Not long after releasing the game’s shotgun-only mode, Tequila Sunrise, PUBG Corp. announced a new event mode for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds called War. Unlike the last several event modes, War is going to look a lot more like Team Deathmatch-style gameplay than the standard battle royale mode that PUBG fans are used to.

War will pit three teams of 10 players against each other in a fight to the death. Unlike in normal PUBG, this mode allows everyone to respawn. Players will start games — and each life — by dropping from the familiar PUBG plane into a small safe zone circle that stays the same size for the entire game, also unlike the game’s traditional mode. There will still be loot scattered across the map, but players will start every life with a random rifle, a random pistol, one grenade, and a level one vest and helmet.

FTC warns console makers about warranty restrictions

Six unnamed companies, including ones “that market and sell ... video gaming systems” have been warned by the Federal Trade Commission that they cannot condition warranty coverage of their products on the consumers’ use of certain parts or service providers.

The FTC noted the warning in a news release on Tuesday. It did not say what specific practices or whether consumer complaints led to the notice. It was also sent to companies who market and sell automobiles and “cellular devices.”

The Witcher 3 PS4 update adds HDR support, but visual bugs too

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has finally been updated with HDR color support on PlayStation 4, but players are complaining that the patch that delivered the feature yesterday appears to have also introduced some visual problems for PS4 Pro users playing in 4K.

Yesterday, developer CD Projekt Red issued a patch that updated The Witcher 3 to version 1.60/1.61 on PS4. The patch added HDR support across all PS4 models, a feature that the studio said back in December would “soon be released.” At the time, CD Projekt Red had patched the Xbox One version of the game with HDR support, but only on the Xbox One X; the studio did not add HDR for the Xbox One S until late March.

Minecraft for Nintendo Switch getting Xbox achievements

Nintendo Switch doesn’t have a built-in achievements system, a la Xbox Achievements or PlayStation Trophies, but the Switch version of Minecraft will soon bring Microsoft’s brand of achievements to the platform.

A set of Xbox Live achievements for Minecraft for Nintendo Switch was recently spotted by content creator Patrick Maka, who posted about the finding on Twitter, and by achievement tracking website True Achievements. The achievement list appears similar to the Xbox versions of the game as well as those on non-Microsoft platforms, like Android and iOS. (PlayStation versions of the game do not tie into Xbox Live Achievements.)

Here’s how WoW Battle for Azeroth’s Warfront mode will work

Warfronts are one of the big new features in World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth. But since they were first talked about at BlizzCon 2017, there’s been some confusion as to what they actually are and how they’ll work. While we don’t have every single detail on the gameplay of these massive scale battles, game director Ion Hazzikostas gave us some system level information during a visit to Blizzard Entertainment last week.

Warfronts are 20-player PvE missions that mimic a real-time strategy game, drawing serious inspiration from Warcraft 3. But instead of controlling the peons and infantry, each player-controlled character acts as a hero would, leading the charge and swinging the battle in your faction’s favor.

Vigilante group plans attack on gaming misogynists

The Bully Hunters are a collective of women who play Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. They’ve teamed up to target in-game misogynists and trolls who harass women.

Describing themselves as a “vigilante hit squad of elite female gamers,” the Bully Hunters will be livestreaming their work on Thursday afternoon at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT. The video above gives you a good sense of what they’re about (warning: it includes some strong language). The video warns: “If you think harassment is just part of the game, we know who you are, we know what you play, and we are coming for you.”

Rabbid Peach dancing to Beyonce’s ‘Naughty Girl’ is Nintendo’s latest gift

There’s something bizarrely beautiful about stumbling upon an official Nintendo video that stars Rabbid Peach dancing to Beyonce’s “Naughty Girl.”

The video above features actual gameplay footage from Just Dance 2018, which is currently available to play on Nintendo Switch. The video’s description refers to the video as an “alternate version of Naughty Girl by Beyoncé starring our newest coach — Rabbids Peach;” the song is available through Just Dance Unlimited, the game’s music subscription service. The dance stage is set in its own alternate version of Mushroom Kingdom, seen in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, which is also made by Just Dance developer Ubisoft.

King of Kong’s Billy Mitchell’s high scores wiped out by Twin Galaxies

All of the high scores of Billy Mitchell, the longtime Donkey Kong and Pac-Man champion, have been thrown out by Twin Galaxies, following a review of seven-year-old footage that determined three of his million-point high scores had been falsified.

Twin Galaxies, the high score-sanctioning authority whose history practically begins with Mitchell’s career in the early 1980s, announced the decision early this morning. It concludes a lengthy review of a challenge brought in early February against Mitchell’s 1,062,800-point performance of July 31, 2010, which had long raised suspicion in the Donkey Kong high score community.

Nintendo Switch eShop update adds a tiny, hidden highlight

At first, this week’s Nintendo Switch eShop update looks like one of the emptiest ever. A Nintendo Switch port of Don’t Starve, an eerie, artsy survival game from 2013, seemingly leads a pack of relative unknowns. Buried within the list, however, is a lovely game that’s perfectly pocket-sized, and one you may have missed after it first launched.

Burly Men at Sea, out now on Switch, may sound like a bro-y action game based on its title. It’s far from it: The game is a mixture of a point-and-click adventure and a visual novel, according to developer Brain&Brain. In Burly Men at Sea, three fishermen star in a folktale that’s narrated and sculpted by the player. There are multiple storylines to craft (which often takes as little as 10 minutes), each one leading the Brothers Beard through a creature-filled Scandinavia.
