Phoenix Point doubles down on what made the original X-COM so unpredictable

The next title from Julian Gollop, the creator of the X-COM franchise, is called Phoenix Point. Today, Gollop’s team at Snapshot Games released its backer beta, a tiny slice of the final product and one of the rewards promised to those who participated in the successful crowdfunding campaign on Fig. After spending a long afternoon with the beta, it’s clear that Phoenix Point has all of the ambition of Gollop’s 1994 classic, and then some.

This isn’t a copycat attempt to cash in on the resurgence of the turn-based tactical genre, but an attempt to reassert Gollop’s own vision for what it could be.

Taki revealed for Soulcalibur 6

Taki, the Soulcalibur franchise mainstay who’s been part of the series since the original Soul Edge, will return for Soulcalibur 6. A Japanese-language trailer for the game, leaked ahead of an official announcement, show’s Taki in action.

The ninja Taki has appeared in all of the main Soulcalibur games to date, with the exception of Soulcalibur 5, which featured her student Natsu. Soulcalibur 6’s version of Taki looks very familiar; she’s wearing her signature demon armor and bright red suit, and wields her dual kodachi, Rekki-Maru and Mekki-Maru.

Fortnite Season 4 kicks off with Battle Royale comet crash

Fortnite Season 4 is now live, with updates to both Save the World and Fortnite Battle Royale. As Battle Royale players have anticipated, the new content drop is based on the aftermath of a hugely teased event: a comet crash, which landed in the middle of the game’s map to create drastic changes all over.

The trailer above provides the setup for where players start off in Fortnite Battle Royale Season 4. A comet crashes into and destroys Dusty Depot — now called Dusty Divot as a result — instead of the expected Tilted Towers. Battle Royale’s gigantic island also suffers other impacts: Craters now appear in a variety of locations; this was one big meteor.

What you need to know about State of Decay 2

A few weeks ago, I attended a University of California lecture on the societal anxieties that produce monsters in popular culture. The professor made the point that zombies represent our fear — most especially when we are young — of suburbia.

The walking dead are representations of mindless consumerism, the unending, pointless itch of want. It’s no coincidence that zombies are often to be found in malls, lurking around gourmet cookie stores or high-end lawn mower departments.

Stardew Valley’s multiplayer mode is nice, but nothing new

Stardew Valley’s multiplayer mode is nice, but nothing new

More than five years since it was first shown off, cooperative multiplayer is now playable in Stardew Valley. The “cooperative” part is key to remember for anyone who may expect that, with three extra farmers in town, Stardew Valley has suddenly become some kind of competitive game. Instead, Steam’s public multiplayer mode beta is much like the single-player game we’re used to — albeit with some friendly faces to say hello to and enlist for help.

I played co-op, as it’s called from the main menu, with video producer Jenna Stoeber. Jenna’s registered more than 80 hours into Stardew Valley, which meant I was farming with a real pro. Not that that matters when playing the beta; you have to start up a farm completely fresh. That could be off-putting to dedicated players who just want to show off their prize-worthy farms to their friends. But where co-op stands now, starting fresh actually makes a lot of sense.

Stardew Valley’s multiplayer mode is playable right now

Stardew Valley’s long-awaited multiplayer mode, along with new single-player features, is now available for testing. Steam users can now check out a beta version of the game’s latest update, available for Mac and Windows PC.

Included in the multiplayer beta is the ability to farm with up to four other players, who will work as your farmhands. Although that makes them sound like they’re subservient to whichever farmer is hosting the multiplayer session, all four players will collaborate on farming, mining and taking part in festivals together. They can even change the difficulty settings so that they can decide how they much they divide up the profit margins.

Bungie says it plans to release Destiny’s original soundtrack, Music of the Spheres

This past December, Destiny fans got their chance to hear the game’s original, unreleased soundtrack composed by ex-Bungie musicians Marty O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori and former Wings frontman Paul McCartney. That soundtrack, titled Music of the Spheres, wasn’t made officially available; fans published it to YouTube, Mega and Soundcloud.

Now it appears that Bungie is going to release the soundtrack, officially, according to members of the studio.

PUBG Corp. confirms the arrest of 15 hackers in China

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has a cheating problem. To combat the problem it seems that the developer, PUBG Corp., is resorting to drastic measures, including working with local law enforcement to make arrests in China.

Rumors of arrests trickled out of China earlier this year when police reportedly picked up some 130 individuals on 30 different open cases. Unfortunately, those numbers were never confirmed. Now the game’s developer and publisher PUBG Corp. has formally announced 15 arrests made by Chinese authorities. Charges include “developing and selling hacking/cheating programs that affect PUBG.” Fines are said to be in excess of $5.1 million.
