GameStop CEO quits after three months on the job

GameStop today announced the resignation of chief executive officer Michael K. Mauler, who left the company “for personal reasons, effective immediately.” Mauler was CEO of GameStop for a surprisingly brief stint; he was appointed to the position in February 2018.

Daniel A. DeMatteo, executive chairman of the board of directors for GameStop, will serve as interim CEO. DeMatteo is one of GameStop’s co-founders and served as interim CEO after J. Paul Raines left the position for health reasons in 2017. Raines died in March, one month after Mauler was named as his successor.

Sony details PlayStation E3 2018 showcase

Sony’s E3 2018 showcase will take place on Monday, June 11, at 6 p.m. PT, and will have a major focus on four upcoming PlayStation 4 games, according to Shawn Layden, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America and chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios. Layden discussed Sony’s plans for E3 2018 during an episode of the PlayStation Blogcast, hinting that this year’s media event will be different from the ones in years past.

In fact, it’s not clear yet if Sony is holding a traditional live, onstage press conference as it has done before. “We’re taking kind of a different angle on how we’re bringing it out,” Layden said.

Reselling your digital games will soon be a reality, but what does that mean?

In real life, RPG guru Brian Fargo ranks a star-12 in the silver-tongued persuasion attribute. On stage at a recent games business event, he crooned to an avid audience on the Next Big Thing in gaming.

Fargo is best known for founding Interplay and InXile, companies that brought us role-playing series like Wasteland and The Bard’s Tale. His love of games, in which chat and personality play a big part, will come as no surprise to anyone who has spent time with him. He loves to talk, most especially about whatever it is he’s obsessing over at the moment.

Nintendo Switch eShop’s most exciting new game has a very weird name

There are a few games that stand out in this week’s Nintendo Switch eShop update, but not because of our familiarity with them — but because they have some seriously weird names. Between Immortal Redneck, Suicide Guy and Three Fourths Home, eShop has some eye-catchingly titled new games in its library.

The most anticipated of these is Immortal Redneck, a game that plays nothing like it sounds. First released on Windows PC back in 2017, Immortal Redneck is referred to as an “old school FPS” by its developer, so expect the kind of first-person action popularized by games like Doom and Quake. There’s also procedurally generated dungeons and the fear of permanent death ... oh, and the whole thing takes place in Egypt, by the way.

Is Destiny 2: Warmind already teasing new weapons for later expansions?

Destiny 2 is back with the Warmind expansion, and players are excited to see the exotic buffs that Bungie has promised. In the campaign, Mars is being taken over by stronger, frozen Hive. If you explore the planet and head to Aurora Reach, there’s a computer terminal you can consult for more information on Rasputin, the Warmind developed by Braytech — the same company that built the Sleeper Simulant. But there are two weapon names we’re not familiar with yet: Hades Flame and Aurora Knives.

Of the total list, we only know of two so far: Sleeper Simulant, an exotic linear fusion rifle, and Valkyrie, a “relic.” The latter first appears at the end of Warmind’s opening story mission, and can then be spotted around Mars. A red, translucent web hovers over pads on the ground where “Subroutine Valkyrie” can be activated. Once you do so, it takes the form of a javelin that can be thrown at enemies, creating a massive explosion. It’s somewhat similar to the Arcstrider Hunter subclass; you can also plant it in the ground for a fiery area-of-effect attack. It has infinite ammo, but its ammo counter is restricted by a time limit. Reloading is not possible.

Pathfinder, with roots in a decades-old strain of D&D, is launching a second edition

The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, one of the most popular franchises in tabletop gaming, is getting a second edition. But that move comes with a bit of baggage, especially considering that the game originated during during a massive schism in the pen-and-paper role-playing community.

Roll the clock back to late 2007. That’s when Wizards of the Coast ended development of Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 and released the game’s fourth edition. Many fans of D&D 3.5 didn’t want to make the change. Neither did game publisher Paizo, which had been developing D&D adventures and content for years. So Paizo set about transforming D&D 3.5 into its own game, Pathfinder. It retained thousands of stalwart fans of D&D 3.5, and eventually became a growing franchise in its own right.

New Sea of Thieves dev update is all about polish and quality of life

Sea of Thieves has collected a loyal fan base due to the core of the game; it offers an incredibly organic, fun and occasionally terrifying pirate experience on the high seas. While there have been criticisms due to lack of content and limited PvE experiences, the developers are apparently listening.

Rare has already announced three upcoming DLC packs that should substantially flesh out the game. While we’re not ready to fight the Hungering Deep or gear up for weekly events yet, the latest developer update polishes some features of the game, addresses feedback and is all about getting the game ready for future updates.

There is a mysterious hatch in Fortnite, and no one knows why it’s there

Fortnite only has one map, and it’s not very large when compared to the speed of the players and the number who drop in during every round. If something new pops up anywhere on the landscape, it will be found and discussed nearly instantly.

A hatch appeared during the second week of season four, and players are trying to figure out what it leads to.
