Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s battle royale mode is called Blackout

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will include a battle royale mode called Blackout, Activision announced during the game’s live reveal today.

The action will take place on the biggest map that developer Treyarch has ever made, roughly 1,500 times larger than Nuketown, among the biggest Call of Duty maps of all time, according to the company. From the video shown during today’s presentation, Blackout’s map appears to include features of other well-known maps and locations from the larger Call of Duty universe.

During its livestream reveal event today, Activision debuted the first look at Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s multiplayer features.

That full-length trailer is above, but here are some highlights: swimming — while using your weapon; grappling hooks abound hand cannons; remote explosives; crossbows that shoot out traps; sticky grenades that spawn additional grenades that can bounce off walls; and, most importantly, a dog.

Fortnite’s new Solo Showdown mode is for players who want to get competitive

So far, Fortnite Battle Royale’s limited time-only modes have focused mostly on making the game a little less competitive and a little more silly. Modes like 50v50, Blitz or even Infinity Gauntlet let players relax and play Fortnite in a totally new way, but not this time. This week’s new game mode is Solo Showdown.

For the first time, Epic is introducing a significantly more competitive mode as the limited-time mode (LTM). This mode will follow the same rules as the standard Solo game mode, but all matches will be scored: The winner of the match gets 100 points, and everyone else gets a slightly smaller amount, all the way down to 25 points for the players that place between 76 and 100.

Mario Tennis Aces, due to launch June 22 on Nintendo Switch, is getting a free demo beginning next week, and a three-day multiplayer tournament at the beginning of June. Switch owners may try out the game from June 1-3 in a pre-launch tournament, Nintendo announced this week.

The demo will be found in the free software group in the Nintendo Switch eShop beginning Thursday, May 24. Users who join the tournament when it begins may choose from four playable characters — Mario, Peach, Yoshi or Bowser — and compete in online multiplayer matches. The winners of those matches will earn points that can be used to unlock as many as five additional characters.

Microsoft’s new Xbox controller is designed entirely for players with disabilities

Video games are a cherished pastime for millions around the world. They stand apart from passive mediums like books and films because of their interactivity; even watching someone play a game on Twitch isn’t the same thing as playing it yourself.

To give more people an opportunity to play those special experiences — specifically, players with mobility impairments that might hinder or prevent the use of a standard gamepad — Microsoft has developed the Xbox Adaptive Controller. It’s a device designed to pair with an array of existing peripherals to let more people with disabilities play games on Windows 10 and Xbox One. It’s not just designed to address one specific disability, but instead to be a base on which any number of adaptive options can be added on.

Bungie details the summer of Destiny 2 in new roadmap

With Destiny 2: Warmind having launched last week and the game’s fall expansion on the horizon, it’s easy to feel like Warmind’s chapter is already coming to a close. But today Bungie dropped a new, detailed development roadmap on the next few months of Destiny 2.

Starting in two weeks, on May 29, Bungie will release three new features: Faction Rally improvements, exotic armor tuning and something called Crucible Labs. Bungie has been a bit quiet on the Faction Rally changes, although we’ll likely hear about that soon. The exotic armor sandbox update suggests something similar to the exotic weapons tuning pass we just saw in the v1.2.0 update alongside Warmind. Ideally, this could make some of the less interesting armor exotics more fun to use.

YouTube is a hotbed for spoilers, but there are a few helpful tricks

Avoiding spoilers on YouTube is an exhausting affair.

Opening YouTube is a risky game when it comes to spoilers, which can pop up in YouTube’s recommendation algorithm, clickbait thumbnails and even search results. This is especially true during the summer blockbuster season, when movies like Deadpool 2, Solo: A Star Wars Story and Avengers: Infinity War are hitting theaters. Watching a trailer suddenly becomes a tedious effort to avoid any type of spoiler that can spring up in the sidebar.

Cliff Bleszinski tossed out a bunch of unused game ideas on Twitter

Just two days ago, game designer Cliff Bleszinski, co-founder of Boss Key Productions and a major force in the creation of the Gears of War franchise, announced that he is stepping back from the games industry for a time. He announced on Twitter that Boss Key, the studio behind LawBreakers and, most recently, Radical Heights, “is effectively no more.”

Then, just a day later, he began posting concept art for games that Boss Key wasn’t able to make. In clearing out his desk at the office, such as it is, Bleszinski has dropped a few closely-guarded secrets on the floor for everyone to look at.
