Nintendo E3 2018 press conference: start time, live stream, and schedule

While most companies are sticking to large-scale stage shows at this year’s E3, Nintendo is once again going with a Nintendo Direct video presentation to show off its biggest games of the year.

Heading into E3 this year, Nintendo hasn’t said much about which games it will be showing off in its presentation, and with both Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild releasing last year, it’s possible we could get some new information on some of the company’s biggest first-party games that were announced at last year’s E3, like the new Yoshi game, or Metroid Prime 4.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 ‘is not making any political statements’

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 ‘is not making any political statements’

In many of its military-themed games, developer Ubisoft has made a point to pull storylines from potential real-world events. Recently, with Far Cry 5, it went a step further by poking at modern day domestic tensions, both social and political, over gun culture and religious extremism. But, ultimately, that game refused to take a side. It prodded audiences with controversy, but was ultimately toothless.

The marketing effort for Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 has spooled up, and Ubisoft is using the same kind of topical imagery and poignant rhetoric once again. Set in the near future, the game asks players to fight back against a corrupt government and help save the United States from tyrants.

We played an hour of Spider-Man and it feels like the best Spidey game

We played an hour of Spider-Man and it feels like the best Spidey game

The biggest surprise of Sony’s Spider-Man is that it makes you feel like a superhero within seconds. Other video game developers have tried to capture the feel of swinging through Manhattan as Peter Parker’s alter ego. Some have come close. Most have landed on the other end of the quality line, somewhere between Forgettable and infamous. We can’t speak to the entire game, but when it comes to instantly being the webslinger, this Spider-Man bests them all. Yes, all of them.

The feel of zipping through the city seems so effortless, so right, that it’s a trial to spot what Insomniac Games has done to capture it. After an hour with the game, I have a few guesses.

Xbox exec explains what Microsoft’s five new studios have in common

Microsoft’s VP of Games Phil Spencer used the Xbox E3 2018 event to announced the company had acquired five studios. Some of those acquisitions felt inevitable (Microsoft has partnered with Playground Games for years) while others were totally unexpected (Compulsion Games first title, Contrast, was a PlayStation 4 launch game).

We asked Head of Microsoft Studios Matt Booty — who oversees the publisher’s first-party studios — why they chose to bring these particular developers into the Xbox fold. Booty shared what the studios have in common, and explained what the acquisition means for Xbox’s older teams.

Every Sony PlayStation trailer from E3 2018

Sony’s E3 2018 PlayStation conference was full of fan favorites.

It opened with an earnest scene from The Last of Us 2 before transitioning into some brutal gameplay. Death Stranding showed off an extended gameplay sequence, introducing new characters and spawning even more questions. But it wasn’t all new games. Capcom also came out of nowhere and surprised everyone with a Resident Evil 2 remake.

Déraciné is a new PlayStation VR game by FromSoftware

Bloodborne and Dark Souls developer FromSoftware is making a virtual reality game for PlayStation VR called Déraciné. It’s coming to PlayStation 4 later this year.

Déraciné puts players in the role of a “spirit summoned by a young girl in a secluded boarding school.” In Déraciné “the player must prove its existence and build a unique bond with the students through clever interactions. As the mystery of the story unfolds, the spirit must use its ability to manipulate the forces of life and time to change the fate of the pupils.”

Trover Saves the Universe is a new, whacky game from Rick and Morty’s co-creator

Trover Saves the Universe, from a co-creator on Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty, is a weird-as-hell platform adventure coming to PlayStation 4 and Playstation VR. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the game this evening during its E3 2018 keynote. The game’s unconventional story is being written and voiced by Justin Roiland.

In the middle of an unusually eclectic E3 show, Sony teased the game with a one-minute trailer highlighted by a nonchalant main character (presumably Trover?) who demonstrates the game’s action before he is electrocuted in his bathtub. Roiland, in the familiar voice he supplies for Rick and Morty, jumps into the scene as another character, presumably Trover’s sidekick, to scream for help.

Nioh 2 revealed during PlayStation E3 presentation

Nioh, Team Ninja’s long-in-development action title that finally saw release early last year, is getting a sequel, as just revealed during Sony’s PlayStation E3 press conference. Titled simple Nioh 2, there’s not much to go on outside of the brief teaser.

Death Stranding trailer debuts gameplay, new characters

Death Stranding returned for Sony’s E3 2018 press conference with another grand, bizarre, wild look. Although Hideo Kojima of Kojima Productions wasn’t on hand to introduce it, he brought something just as good: gameplay.

This one starred Norman Reedus’ character Sam Bridges, the protagonist of the game. We saw him in a rainy, jungle-like environment trying to survive. That involves climbing mountains, carrying a heavy life pack — in which he holds onto that tiny baby, encased in a synthetic womb— and even pulling off an infected toenail.
