Mario Tennis Aces is getting more characters — and a new way to unlock them

Mario Tennis Aces will get two additional playable characters after launch: Koopa Troopa and Blooper. Nintendo announced today that the characters will be added to the game as free, downloadable content this summer.

But there’s a bit of a twist to how Nintendo is rolling out Koopa Troopa and Blooper: Players will only be able to get access to those characters early if they take part in online tournaments for Mario Tennis Aces.

Sea of Thievesnewest patch, version 1.12, is now available; it adds a new event and builds on the Bilge Rat faction introduced last month in The Hungering Deep.

The new event is called Skeleton Thrones, and it gives players 10 thrones to discover in the pirate game’s large open world. Five small thrones may be taken by individual pirates, and five large ones will need multiple crewmates to sit on.

Why Nintendo didn’t show Metroid Prime 4 at E3

Nintendo spent much of its E3 presentation this year highlighting anticipated titles, like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! But many fans expressed disappointment that Metroid Prime 4, which was announced with the briefest of teases during E3 2017, was nowhere to be found.

It’s probably not too surprising, but the game seems to be quite a ways out, and Nintendo aims to only show things that are a little closer to release, said Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime.

Destiny 2: Forsaken’s campaign begins with glorious trolls

At E3 2018, Destiny 2: Forsaken developer Bungie spoiled its own game. In a trailer that weighed in at a svelte minute and 39 seconds, only one thing happened, but it was a Very Big Thing: Cayde-6 died.

I thought it was weird for a developer to give away something so big until I got my hands on the first level of Forsaken behind closed doors at E3, and I realized that the beginning of the campaign is a giant troll in the best kind of way.

Yoshi’s Switch game is now coming in 2019

Nintendo confirmed today that Yoshi’s solo Nintendo Switch game has been delayed to 2019.

Yoshi was notably absent during Nintendo’s E3 2018 presentation, which Nintendo said ahead of time would focus on its 2018 slate — even though the E3 Nintendo Direct opened with a 2019 game, Daemon X Machina. Yoshi’s game is also not on the E3 2018 show floor, and the game doesn’t even have an official title yet, but since it was previously announced for release this year, we were expecting to see it.

Black Ops 4 DLC to be sold exclusively in season pass

Call of Duty publisher Activision is employing a different downloadable content plan for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 this year. Although the new setup is meant to provide players with a more regular cadence of DLC releases, Activision’s all-or-nothing sales strategy for the add-ons is less customer-friendly than it used to be.

In previous years, Activision offered a Call of Duty season pass that covers multiple post-launch DLC packs — four of them released over the course of a year, usually. As you’d expect, it was cheaper to purchase the season pass than to buy the add-ons individually. For instance, the season pass for 2017’s Call of Duty: WWII costs $49.99, while the DLC packs cost $14.99 each (for a total of $59.96).

Fortnite on the Nintendo Switch has already been downloaded 2M times

Fortnite was released on the Nintendo Switch shortly before noon ET yesterday, and the game has already racked up 2 million downloads on the Switch eShop, according to Nintendo.

Fortnite’s launch went extremely well — we had more than 2 million downloads in less than 24 hours,” Reggie Fils-Aime, president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America, told Polygon in an interview at E3 2018 today. “I think that speaks to the power of the franchise, the engagement of our players and the resonance of being able to play it anytime, anywhere.”

Cyberpunk 2077 trailer remix has Witcher fans hyped for a crossover

A fan-made remix for CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 E3 trailer, which debuted at Microsoft’s Xbox press conference, is hyping up fans of The Witcher for a cameo that many hope will tie the two franchises together.

Fans who played The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt may remember a conversation between Geralt and Ciri, in which the latter character talks about one of the worlds she visited while attempting to outrun Eredin Bréacc Glas. In the game, Ciri speaks of other worlds and time periods she’d traveled to.
