Tetris Effect has been in development for 6 years

Tetris Effect is a game that seems so obvious, even simple, if you describe it one sentence: Tetris, set to music, inside of virtual reality.

But the mind-expanding experience is so much more than that, and it took so much longer to make than possibly any other take on Tetris in history.

How does Fortnite hold up on the Switch graphically? Let’s find out

Fortnite on the Nintendo Switch is here, and it’s already very popular. The folks at Digital Foundry took a detailed look at how the visuals of the game hold up against the most powerful console on the market, the Xbox One X.

It’s not a fair comparison, but the side-by-side nature of the video is very helpful in communicating what the Switch version of the game is doing visually. And the verdict is pretty positive. Watch the entire video above for some interesting notes about how the game runs, and then check out what struck us about the analysis below.

Compulsion Games promises to continue making ‘crazy games’ following Microsoft acquisition

Compulsion Games, the developer behind We Happy Few and Contrast, was one of four studios recently acquired by Microsoft. That won’t change how they make games, Alex Epstein, narrative director on We Happy Few, told Polygon.

The team at Compulsion will “continue making crazy games,” he said, adding that’s why “Microsoft is buying us.” The only difference Epstein sees moving forward is having more time to create polished games.

Watch 30 minutes of Daemon X Machina gameplay from E3

Nintendo announced a brand-new action game called Daemon X Machina during its E3 2018 Nintendo Direct presentation, offering a tantalizing glimpse at the stylized mech action experience coming to Switch. Later, during Nintendo’s Treehouse Live stream, the game’s director, Kenichiro Tsukuda, took a deeper dive into the game’s mechanics. If you missed it then, now’s a good chance to catch up on the stream.

In the clip, Tsukuda walks viewers through character customization and a brief look at mech customization, but most of the gameplay presentation focuses on action. Fans of FromSoftware’s Armored Core series will probably find something to like in Daemon X Machina, which appears to be full of mech-on-mech action in open battlefields, and on-the-fly customization of the game’s flying mechs, called Arsenals.

Video game Spider-Man will enter Marvel Comics canon this fall

For weeks now, Marvel Comics has been teasing a mysterious new Spider-Man event to eager fans: Spidergeddon.

The name itself is a clue. The event will be a successor of sorts to 2014’s Spider-Verse storyline, which introduced now-fan-favorite characters like Spider-Gwen and Silk to the Marvel Universe. “Spidergeddon is nigh!” cries the teaser image, featuring more than a dozen permutations of Spider-Man from different parallel versions of Marvel’s main setting, Earth-616.

Three things Cyberpunk 2077 gets right about the original tabletop RPG

Warsaw, Poland-based CD Projekt Red was on hand at this year’s E3 with a nearly hourlong demonstration of its next game, Cyberpunk 2077. The maker of the Witcher series is well outside of its comfort zone on this one, having traded in horses, magic and swords for fast cars, cybernetic implants and futuristic small arms.

Polygon’s viewing of the demo this morning was among the last very last at the expo, so you may have heard that Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person, role-playing, cover-based shooter and not a third-person brawler. But what many writers have overlooked is how much respect CD Projekt is giving to the game’s original lore, a tabletop RPG first published in 1988.

The Last of Us sales top 17 million copies across PS3 and PS4

The Last of Us publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment has sold more than 17 million copies of the post-apocalyptic action game, developer Naughty Dog announced today.

A Sony representative told Polygon that the figure consists of units sold through to customers. Although the total represents sales as of April 2018, Naughty Dog posted the news on Twitter today, presumably because it’s the fifth anniversary of the game’s release. The Last of Us debuted June 14, 2013, on PlayStation 3, back when the PlayStation division was known as Sony Computer Entertainment. Within the game’s first 13 months on store shelves, Sony sold 7 million copies of it.

The number of women protagonists in E3 games still in single digits

Feminist Frequency released its annual breakdown of gender roles in E3 games today. Despite high-profile showings from The Last of Us Part 2, Wolfenstein Youngblood and Battlefield 5, the share of games at the show featuring women in leading roles is at eight percent, consistent with the average over the past few years.

By contrast, Feminist Frequency counted 24 percent of games with a clear male lead. Half of games at the show allow players to choose gender. A further five percent are gender ambiguous.

Battlefield 5 subreddit tells members it’s done with phony ‘historical accuracy’ arguments

You can add Battlefield 5’s subreddit to the chorus of voices no longer interested in deflection arguments about historical accuracy, or which question the presence of playable women characters in the World War II game.

“Sadly this subreddit has proven to be unable to have a civil discussion about these things without devolving into name calling and slapfights,” moderators wrote in a post that went up overnight. They pointed out that some players had legitimate criticisms about customization options, but their remarks are then hijacked by thinly-veiled trolling complaints that resent the game’s diversity and inclusion of women and others.

The Last of Us Part 2’s creators said Ellie is the only playable character

The Last of Us Part 2 developer Naughty Dog stirred waters with remarks in a closed-doors presentation of its game at E3, suggesting that Joel, the protagonist of the original game, will not be a playable character in the sequel.

IGN reported today that The Last of Us Part 2 creative director Neil Druckmann told the audience in the private presentation that “Ellie is the only playable character in the game.”
