Madden NFL 19 has the most 99-rated players in a decade

Earlier this week, EA Sports announced that seven (7) players would begin Madden NFL 19 rated 99 overall — a prestigious number for a video game whose ratings are watched more closely than any other sport’s. Seven 99s seemed like a really high number to me. I went back over 20 years worth of launch-day ratings and discovered that, yep, it is.

The last time the Madden NFL series had seven 99s was Madden NFL 07, which was the series’ debut on PlayStation 3. The last Madden to have more was Madden NFL 99, which was the first edition that didn’t publish on either of the 16-bit consoles that made it famous in the 1990s.

Fortnite is having a one time only in-game event this Saturday

Rumors of a missile launch in Fortnite have been circulating for weeks now, but developer Epic Games has finally confirmed that one is on the way. According to a news post in-game, the event is schedule for 1:30 p.m. EST on Saturday.

Perhaps the most surprising part of this launch is that it’s slated to happen just one time. As some players noticed since last week, the game’s TVs have been displaying countdown timers. While there have been several countdowns so far, it seems like this one is finally going to have something meaningful at the end. This is likely a lead up to the end of the season, which is scheduled to come on July 9. While last season’s end was punctuated by meteorites crashing to Earth and destroying player’s structures or anything else in their way, it appears this season’s event could have a much bigger impact.

PvP in Destiny 2 returns to 12 players in July

Destiny 2’s Crucible has been in an interesting spot since launch, and Bungie has been making frequent changes to keep up with player’s expectations. Patch 1.2.3 — coming on July 17 — is no exception, and will come with a ton of new Crucible changes for players to engage with. Bungie’s weekly update — This Week at Bungie — revealed some of the more exact details coming in the new patch.

For many players, the most noticeable change will be Quickplay’s transition from 4v4 back to Destiny’s 6v6. To compensate for the extra players, the Control and Clash game modes will have their point threshold brought up a bit. Supremacy will also be removed from the Quickplay playlist and become a weekly featured playlist instead. Rumble will become a full-time playlist as well.

Fortnite’s Final Fight mode has been replaced with 50v50 mode

Fortnite’s Final Fight mode has been replaced with 50v50 mode

After being added to the game with patch v4.5 on Wednesday morning, Fortnite’s Final Fight Teams of 12 Limited Time Mode has been removed from live servers and replaced with the much more popular 50v50 mode.

Fortnite’s Final Fight Mode, which debuted with a teams-of-20 version last week, has never been the community’s favorite exercise. So, Epic was certainly taking a risk when it decided to run the mode twice in a row, this time with groups of 12 instead. The mode was met with harsh feedback from the community — especially after Playground Mode was disabled only a few hours after going live. Finally, Epic went ahead and removed the Final Fight mode part way through its run, and replaced it with the far more popular 50v50 Limited Time Mode.

A 7-year-old Sims mobile game is being pulled from Chinese app stores

The Sims Freeplay, a seven-year-old mobile game, will no longer be available in seven countries starting on July 5. On Wednesday, one of the community managers on EA’s forum announced that due to “regional standards,” the game is being removed from iOS and Adroid app stores in China, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Egypt.

The Sims Freeplay is a free-to-play Sims mobile game (not to be confused with The Sims Mobile, released earlier this year). Freeplay has been around since 2011 on iOS, moving to Android, Blackberry, and Kindle Fire in following years.

FIFA Ultimate Team will reveal odds of landing a top star

For the first time in the mode’s 10-year history, FIFA Ultimate Team will reveal the odds players have of finding items when they open a pack of virtual cards.

Daryl Holt, the chief operating officer for EA Sports, told Eurogamer that FIFA 19 will show the chances of winning certain types of items. Players and other items within Ultimate Team — whose objective is to assemble a highly rated fantasy sports squad, basically — are usually classified as bronze, silver, gold, rare and other labels according to the players’ ratings and/or fame.

They put Barack Obama in the new Shaq Fu

The developers of Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn released a new downloadable episode today that stars Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States, as a gun-toting, drone-striking street vigilante. It’s called Barack Fu: The Adventures of Dirty Barry.

Barack Fu is available as a free add-on for owners of the physical retail version of the game (the DLC will be available for purchase digitally at a later date). Obama did not endorse the new Shaq Fu, mind you. Publisher Wired Productions called the former POTUS’ appearance in Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn a parody.

Pokémon Go glitch keeps players from becoming better friends

Pokémon Go’s new Friends feature has a lot of benefits for players, with bigger bonuses given out to closer Friends. That hasn’t been the case for the last several days, however, due to a glitch that’s making it harder to grow better friendships.

Once two players become Friends, they have to tend to that friendship on a daily basis. (It’s not too different from real life, to be honest.) One day of hanging out in-game — whether by trading, doing a Raid battle together or sending each other a gift — will bump you two up to Good Friends; a week straight of hanging out will make you Great Friends, etc. For a lot of players, that hasn’t been the case since late last week, however; Friends are finding that their friendship levels are out of sync.

Mario Tennis Aces is getting three new characters this fall

Mario Tennis Aces is getting three new characters this fall

Nintendo has announced that Diddy Kong, Birdo and Koopa Paratroopa are coming to Mario Tennis Aces this fall, teasing the characters at the end of the trailer embedded at the top of this post. This is great news for players who have felt like the game is a bit thin on content at the moment.

Mario Tennis Aces is a very good game, but it’s not quite the game many of us were hoping for it to be. It’s helpful to think about it in terms of a fighting game, and not the sort of RPG-heavy Nintendo sports game that has been released in the past. And that distinction is part of the reason that news about new characters is so exciting; fighting games live and die by their characters.

Summer Games Done Quick 2018: what to watch on the sixth day

Summer Games Done Quick 2018 heads into its weekend finale with 22 events over the next 24 hours (noon today until noon Saturday). Highlights include Super Mario 64 — the most-run game on speedrun.com — in primetime, blocks of Star Wars and Kirby, and TASbot running two games at midnight. You can watch it all live, right here.

TASbot, of course, is the Tool-Assisted Speedrun bot, which is programmed to play an ideal (i.e. not humanly possible) run through a game. At 11:48 p.m. TASBot takes on F-Zero GX and then Super Metroid (a zero% run) at 12:08 a.m.
