Blizzard 'has completely changed,' say Diablo's original creators

The past year has been one of the rockiest in memory for PC gaming paragon Blizzard Entertainment. The maligned announcement of Diablo: Immortal at BlizzCon 2018 was just the beginning of a tumultuous year of news like Blizzard cutting hundreds of jobs despite posting record profits, rumors of Activision's increasing cost-driven influence, and an enormous international controversy when two Taiwanese casters and a pro Hearthstone player were banned when said player used his post-match interview to call for Hong Kong's independence from China.

Elite: Dangerous factions in showdown over giant, long-lost generation ship

Space sim Elite: Dangerous’ latest community event is a neat sci-fi story as the Federation and Empire face off over the Golconda, a long-lost generation ship launched from Earth more than a thousand years before the game’s current time. Called The Golconda, the ship’s inhabitants are the first found alive on a lost generation ship in the game. The generation ship had long ago arrived at its destination, but had chosen to preserve itself as a closed society and never contacted the outside world. Its inhabitants first reached out to request advanced medical supplies, however, because they were facing a viral outbreak which they could not stop—the game’s player pilots leapt to the ship’s aid, delivering thousands of tons of supplies and warding off pirate attacks on shipping.

Factorio now has a release date

After over eight years in development, logistics simulator Factorio will reach version 1.0 midway through next year. Developer Wube Software has announced that it will release the game out of early access on the 25th of September, 2020. In their latest developer diary, Wube reckoned with the game’s extended development cycle by deciding a change of ethos was in order. “We feel that the Factorio development is taking way too long,” said Wube’s Technology Director Michal, “The approach ‘it is done when it is done’ was serving us well to deliver a high quality product, but if we continued this way, we would be doing it basically forever.” Wube admits that the game is already polished and an immediate release wouldn’t feel like a failure, but says there are things in the game that the team would consider unfinished.

Dicey Dungeons is getting more updates, mod support

Terry Cavanagh, creator of Super Hexagon and VVVVVV, released his latest game Dicey Dungeons three months ago. The combat-focused RPG about heroes who've been transformed into dice has apparently had an even more successful launch than either of his previous commercial games, and those were nothing to be sneezed at. As he wrote on his blog, "Within just its first month, Dicey Dungeons outsold the lifetime sales of my previous two games on Steam combined."

Happy 15th birthday, Half-Life 2

It's Half-Life 2's 15th Birthday today! On November 16th, 2004 Valve released one of PC Gaming’s most celebrated games, the hotly-anticipated Half-Life 2 would go on to become the foundation of a generation of games and famous mods. The continued adventures of Gordon Freeman were a hallmark First-Person Shooter with a physics-based engine that encouraged you to play with the world around you. (It also launched the pale lighting and muddy tones aesthetic that defined that era of games.) Without Half-Life 2 and its Source Engine, we wouldn’t have a lot of landmark games: Team Fortress 2, Portal, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, and Insurgency, to name a few.

Xbox Game Pass didn’t stop Gears 5 from outselling Gears of War 4

Xbox Game Pass didn’t stop Gears 5 from outselling Gears of War 4

Gears 5’s inclusion on the Xbox Game Pass service didn’t stop it from outselling Gears of War 4, said Microsoft Executive Vice President of Gaming Phil Spencer at the XO19 event this week. In a wide-ranging interview with Eurogamer Spencer said that “Gears 5 sold well for us. It sold better than Gears 4. And we feel good about it.” Specifically, Spencer indicated that having the title available at launch on both Game Pass and standalone didn’t detract from Microsoft’s view of the title’s success. It’s a notable data point for those who want games to stay available as standalone releases rather than be pushed into exclusive subscription service models—showing that the demand for standalone is very much there.

Warhammer Fantasy’s Old World is coming back

Warhammer Fantasy’s Old World is coming back

Games Workshop has announced that they will return to the iconic Warhammer Fantasy setting, the Old World, in the coming years. The Old World has not been the primary setting of any tabletop games since 2015 when Warhammer: The Game of Fantasy Battles was replaced by Warhammer: Age of Sigmar after an in-universe apocalypse called The End Times. However, the Old World is quite popular as the setting of the biggest Warhammer Fantasy video games—such as Total War: Warhammer 2 and Warhammer: Vermintide 2. The studio’s announcement is little more than a teaser announcement and a logo. More, says the post, is “a long way off. Years. More than two. Like three or more.”

The biggest PC gaming stories of the week

Last week, Red Dead Redemption 2 finally released on PC, and you can read James' review here. The short of it is that it's excellent, if hampered by technical issues which are being patched out (one patch has already helped with stuttering). If you're waiting for the Steam release in December, hopefully it's in its best shape by then.
