This mod recreates the Half-Life alpha

Back in 2013 an alpha build of Half-Life called version 0.54, a version first distributed to game journalists in 1997, was released to the public. Its six chapters included one called The Office Warrens, which would eventually evolve into the finished game's fourth chapter. It served as the inspiration for the In Deep mod, which you can try an early version of now.

Heart’s Choice interactive romance novels coming to Steam

A new line of interactive fiction is set to release soon on Steam: a whole bunch of romance novels from publisher Heart’s Choice, a new imprint of prolific interactive fiction publisher Choice of Games. The announcement of the Heart’s Choice imprint came a few years ago, but writing novel-length games takes time to write. You might remember Choice of Games from the first text-only game on Steam, or from seeing any of their releases over the years. This initial Heart’s Choice release has three games:

There’s going to be a Destiny cookbook because of course there is

There’s going to be a Destiny cookbook, according to an Amazon listing, which is not something I think I understand at all. World of Warcraft cookbook, okay, that makes a lot of sense: There’s literally cooking in the game. Elder Scrolls, yeah, food everywhere, that scans. Fallout, with its emphasis on weird preserved pre-apocalypse food and post-apocalyptic delights, has a cookbook that makes sense to me. Even reverse-engineering the recipes in Stardew Valley I get.

Get the Elgato Stream Deck for just $100 right now ($30 off)

The Elgato Stream Deck is an extremely helpful piece of technology, giving the user 15 customizable buttons for quickly opening apps, adjusting audio, switching between OBS scenes, and much more. It's designed for streaming (as you could probably tell from the name), but it can also serve as a general productivity tool, and now you can get it for $99.99 from Amazon for Black Friday. That's $30 off the usual cost, and it's the first time this year the device has dropped below $100.

Jedi: Fallen Order modders are aggressively tweaking the game’s look

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order might only have been out for a little over a week, but modders are already going to town on the game’s visuals. Visual, rendering, and display mods are usually the first to appear for games without extensive mod support, but the number of mods popping up addressing similar issues speak to a particularly pressing desire. There are plenty of modders focusing on reshades, FX, lighting, outfit visuals, and especially Cal’s appearance for the game. Nobody seems quite happy with how Cal looks. There’s one that tweaks his adult textures, one that makes him Ben Skywalker from the expanded universe, and one that makes him, uh, “less of a ginger.”

Star Citizen shows off 20v20 mode, snow effects, Anvil Carrack commercial

Star Citizen is running its CitizenCon right now, and developers Cloud Imperium Games have a bit of new stuff to show off. They’ve announced a new 20v20 game mode called Theatres of War. It’s a multi-stage, combined arms, objective-based combat mode in the game’s Star Marine FPS bit. (If you’re interested in Star Citizen, there’s a free period about to begin.) Seems exciting for those who want a bit of battlefield in their Star Citizen, since it incorporates vehicles, flight, and infantry combat—though as with all things Star Citizen it’s very much an Alpha. Here’s the trailer for Theatres of War:
