Valve is handing out TF2 VAC bans to Linux users with 'catbot' in their username

Catbots, if you're not familiar with the term, are player-created bots that flood TF2 servers, lining up headshots on everything in sight. They're all called things like 'catbot 1574', and they're a nuisance. But in an attempt to stamp them out, some players are claiming that Valve has crossed a line. Anybody with 'catbot' in their Linux username (yes, not their Steam username), will now find themselves with an automatic VAC ban, regardless of whether they've actually booted up TF2 or not.

Destiny 2 player develops his own Infinite Forest that's actually endless

The Infinite Forest at the heart of Destiny 2's Curse of Osiris DLC is, as Tim wrote last month, "infinite in name only". Far from the endless labyrinth that some players had hoped for, the forest is really just connective tissue between story beats, and once you've finished one segment you're whisked away. An amateur developer and Destiny 2 player called Pheonise felt strongly enough to have a crack at fixing that, cobbling together a concept for a truly infinite forest in just two days.

Steam reveals 2017's biggest earners, including The Witcher 3, H1Z1 and PUBG

Steam has released its annual list of the highest-earning games of the year, and it includes one or two surprises. Among the 12 games that generated the most revenue sits Ghost Recon Wildlands, for example, which I wouldn't have expected. The overall biggest earners also include evergreen titles not released this year, such as The Witcher 3, Rocket League and Counter Striker: Global Offensive.

Need for Speed Payback to add online free roam

Need for Speed Payback fans have had their calls for an online free roam mode (belatedly) answered: it will be added to the game in 2018. Currently the only way to roam around with friends is when you're waiting for a lobby to fill up, but in the new mode you'll be able to muck around in the streets of Fortune Valley with friends or randoms without having to jump into a race.

Platinum Games working on two self-published games (and you can bet they'll end up on PC)

Bayonetta and Vanquish developer Platinum Games is working on two self-published games—its first stab at going it alone. Head of development Atsushi Inaba told GameInformer that in 2017 the company encouraged game pitches from all its staff, which has yielded "two designs that we’re genuinely focused on". Given the quality of its previous games, and the fact that it told PC Gamer in April that it would like all its games to release on PC, that's something to be excited about.

Bleak government spying sim Beholder has a sequel out next year

After Andy played Beholder last year he described it as a cross between Papers, Please and gloomy East Berlin police drama The Lives of Others, which sounds about as bleak as a game could get. You were a landlord employed by the government to spy on your neighbors, forced to grass them up (and watch them get taken away in the back of a van) or else risk your job, and your family's lives. You can expect more moral dilemmas like that from Beholder 2, which developer Warm Lamp Games has announced with a teaser trailer, above.

Dead Cells getting an Early Access price bump in January, devs 'far from finishing the game'

When an update video for Dead Cells—the slick Early Access Metroidvania—popped up on Steam, I was hoping that we'd get a release date. But alas, no such luck. The Motion Twin team said they are still "far from finishing the game", which has been up on Steam since May. They also revealed that the game is getting a price bump after the Winter Sale to reflect the significant process they've made in development: it will rise from $16.99/£13.99 to $19.99 (probably around £16).
