Eugen Systems developers are taking their employer to court

For the last seven weeks, 21 developers from Steel Division: Normandy ‘44 studio Eugen Systems have been on strike. This follows 15 months of discussions over what they call “serious violations” of their rights, ranging from their working environment to pay disputes. After several meetings in March, an agreement still hasn’t been reached, and 15 current and ex-developers have taken the matter to the French Labour Court.

Chrono Trigger's old graphics are coming back

JRPG darling Chrono Trigger took its time coming to PC. 23 years, in fact. Lamentably, the version we got was a mobile port, itself based on the DS port, laden with an awful UI that was designed for touch screens, ugly “high-resolution” graphics and some extra bugs for good measure. This put something of a damper on its surprise arrival. There’s still some hope for it yet, however, as a series of updates were just announced.

Brave a flooded world in your little plane in Above

No longer blessed with the patience or time to invest in flight sims, the free-wheeling aerial acrobatics of Above seem right up my street. It’s a top-down action adventure that tasks would-be pilots with soaring through the skies above a flooded world in a tiny plane. You’ll still need to watch out for the leviathans below, however.

Jeff Kaplan would love to make an Overwatch battle royale mode

By 2020, the world will be full of people hunting each other and occasionally hiding in bushes as battle royales spill out into the streets. They're already on our phones. So of course everyone wants a slice of the pie that's currently dominated by PUBG and Fortnite. Including Blizzard. Overwatch has already experimented with several different modes, from PvE horde romps to small duels, but a battle royale mode would be a considerably greater challenge.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is ditching loot boxes

The evils of capitalism, like Sauron, have been dealt a blow. Six months after it launched, Monolith has announced that Middle-earth: Shadow of War’s Orc-filled loot boxes, or war chests, are going to be plucked out of the open world action romp, along with all traces of microtransactions. You’ll need to wait a little bit longer for Middle-earth to be free though, as the changes aren’t happening until July 17.

Chasm, the procedurally generated RPG platformer, launches mid-year

Chasm is a procedurally generated Metroidvania which has been in development for quite some time. Initially Kickstarter-funded back in 2013, it attracted nearly $200,000, demonstrating that back in 2013 the thirst for games like this was real. Fast forward to 2018, Chasm finally has a release window.

Blizzard teases big changes coming to the Overwatch Uprising event

Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan and lead engineer Tim Ford revealed in a "super-special" Overwatch developer update video that, as we kind of expected, there will be more to this year's Uprising event than just the return of the Uprising brawl. In fact, Blizzard is changing the name of the event to "Overwatch Archives," to reflect its broader focus on the organization's past adventures.
