Our Choices In Always Sometimes Monsters: Murder And Defecation

I was excited when I found out that Vagabond Dog’s Always Sometimes Monsters was going to be at PAX East. I greatly enjoyed the game when I stumbled upon it in the PAX Prime Indie Megabooth in August. If you haven’t read that preview, I’d strongly recommend doing that first.

This time around, the demo was completely different. Instead of choosing our player character and significant other, they were randomly assigned. It just so happens that the random number generator picked a white male player character and a white female love interest.

For me, that’s the most boring of possibilities, but I made the most out of it, allowing a friend to drive the demo while I watched how he chose to tackle the situations. Observing his choices was fascinating.

Broforce Had Me Laughing From Start To Finish

Broforce Had Me Laughing From Start To Finish

The wonderful thing about the indie movement is that there are so many teams willing to take risks, try something new, and just have fun. And then there are developers like Free Lives that take that ball and run as hard and fast as they can for the end zone.

Broforce features a cast of recognizable characters that have been bro-ized. There are currently 15 playable bros in the early access build, but Free Lives is aiming for 30 by release.

During our demo, we had two other players with us. Each new level and every new life (only earned by free bro hostages) assigns a random bro. This makes things more challenging, because each has a different weapon and special ability.

Defense Grid 2 Reminds Us Why We Love Tower Defense

Defense Grid 2 Reminds Us Why We Love Tower Defense

The tower defense genre, once a relatively unknown concept, exploded with the advent of Apple's mobile marketplace and quickly became oversaturated before the tides mercifully receded a few years later. Hidden Path believes the time is right to remind us why we fell in love with these games in the first place.

Defense Grid 2 adds new towers, aliens, and features that make the game more accessible without diminishing the challenge. In fact, there are four different difficulty levels now for those players that want to test themselves.

In the new title, players won't be able to drop a tower just anywhere. There are now squares, which eliminate the worry of towers being placed too close to one another. A new pathing line shows how your tower will affect the movement of oncoming aliens (and ensure that you're closing off a route when you intend to). This was immensely helpful to me in determing where to build.

Open Levels Give Players More Flexibility For Cat-And-Mouse Play

Open Levels Give Players More Flexibility For Cat-And-Mouse Play

Sniper Elite V2 had some great ideas when Rebellion released the title in 2012. The varying degrees of difficulty related to wind and ballistics made finding a sniper nest and picking a shot extremely engaging. It was the moments away from the rifle scope that were a bit rough around the edges.

Sniper Elite 3, which is set in Africa during World War II, remedies a number of the problems of its predecessor with more logical artificial intelligence. In V2, once players took a shot, enemies would almost immediately know where to look. Not only wasn't this realistic, it was frustrating.

In Sniper Elite 3, the AI will duck for cover and soldiers close by will come to investigate. However, unless you take another shot or two from that location, they won't be able to hone in on you.

OlliOlli Devs Hang Up The Skateboard In Favor Of Satirical Political Murder

OlliOlli Devs Hang Up The Skateboard In Favor Of Satirical Political Murder

When OlliOlli developer Roll7 announced Not a Hero, I'll admit to being a bit confused. "How do you move from skateboarding to tongue-in-cheek political murder?" I thought to myself. And then I spent time with the game at PAX East and realized that the two aren't all that different.

If you haven't yet played OlliOlli, it's a side-scrolling skateboard title that recaptures the magic once bottled by Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Skate. You can read our review here.

On the surface, Not a Hero looks like it abandons everything Roll7 accomplished with it's critically acclaimed Vita skater. Players are under the employ of Bunnylord, who is running for mayor, but has no chance of winning. Of course, he does what any politician would do in that situation: he hires part-time killers to eliminate the competition.

Two Trailers For The Price Of One

Even with a name like Daylight, Zombie Studios upcoming procedurally-generated survival horror title is surprisingly dark. That must be why the the developer feels it needs to show us more of the game with two new trailers.

The following trailers showcase the game's hospital environment and a lurking shadow that seems to be following the player throughout the game. Check out the two new trailers below:
