The Unexpected Surprises Of Replaying Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, And Halo 4

about X hours ago from

We’re not ready to post our full review online yet for Halo: The Master Chief Collection, but I did want to share some of my impressions of replaying Halo’s campaigns and what surprised me about revisiting the journey.

Halo: Combat Evolved AnniversaryI am one of the biggest Halo fans in the office, but I skipped Anniversary in 2011 after being severely disappointed in the multiplayer offering. I enjoy the Halo campaigns, but my personal incentive for playing has always been multiplayer first.

In this age, even with the new visuals, Halo may look outdated, but its large scale still feels intact. Landing on Halo for the first time still feels grand and impressive, and being able to switch to the old visuals is a welcome addition. In the original release, switching to the old version meant enduring a short but noticeable fade to black. The switch is instant now and the game is better for it.

Colonize An Unknown Planet In Monolith Soft's Upcoming JRPG

We didn’t know a whole lot about Xenoblade Chronicles X prior to yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, yet it still made our list of top ten most anticipated games of 2015. Now we know the setup and plot of the WiiU exclusive, as well as some gameplay details.

In the clip below, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata details the game’s story, which follows the survivors of Earth after they crash-land on a habitable planet. The plot will revolve around the group’s attempts at colonization and planetary research, including hunting of indigenous beasts (not unlike that seen in Monster Hunter), through story and side-missions. The survivors' home base is New Los Angeles, a bustling metropolis that serves as a hub for missions and game progression.

The story takes place in a “massive” open world larger than that seen in the game’s predecessor, Xenoblade Chronicles, and will feature a navigation system on the GamePad for easier traversal and exploration.

Abe The Trapper Is Evolve's Sneakiest And Most Complex Hunter Yet

Abe The Trapper Is Evolve's Sneakiest And Most Complex Hunter Yet

Evolve developer Turtle Rock has just announced another new playable character from its upcoming game: Abe the Trapper. Like the other Trappers, Abe can create a large dome that holds the monster inside, forcing it to battle the hunters, but that is where the similarities end.

According to Turtle Rock, Abe is the most complex of the game's 12 playable hunters, wielding a custom-shotgun, tracking darts, and stasis grenades. Abe's custom-shotgun is less accurate the faster you fire it, so taking slow shots will allow you to hit far away targets, while a burst of shots will be powerful at close ranges.

His darts can be fired at the beast for easy tracking, or you can attach it to a random animal and hope the monster eats it, causing the dart to activate in its stomach. His stasis grenades slow the monster until it can escape their area of effect, but since he can deploy five grenades at once it will be hard to escape their clutches.

16 Free DLC Packs Coming To Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt hits store shelves and digital services on February 24, 2015. On the next day, players will receive two free DLC packs for the Temerian Armor set for Geralt and his horse, and a cosmetic set of beard and hairstyles for Geralt.

Moving forward, developer CD Projekt Red plans to release two new free pieces of DLC each week, eventually reaching 16 DLC items in total. The second week of DLC consists of a new quest, and an alternative look for Yennefer of Vengerberg. The DLC works for all versions of the game.

In a blog entry on The Witcher 3's official site, Marcin IwiƄski, co-founder and joint CEO of CD Projekt Red, speaks of being a gamer today. "Every time we reach out for a new release, we expect to be taken care of. We expect support if we encounter any problems, we love updates constantly improving the experience, and we feel really special when we receive free content that gives us more than we initially paid for. It doesn’t have to be huge, it can be an awesome skin for a character, or an extra sword, or armor. Unfortunately this treatment is quite rare these days."

Adventures In Diversity With Captain Toad

about X hours ago from

We recently got a chance to play through 11 stages of the upcoming Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and each level offered a distinct set of mechanics and visuals.

It’s surprising how much of an extension Treasure Tracker – at this pre-release stage – feels to Super Mario 3D World. You may not be able to jump, but many mechanics from both the Mario levels and the Captain Toad levels appear in Treasure Tracker. Some levels prove to be surprisingly difficult as well, which shouldn’t be surprising considering World is home to one of 3D Mario’s most difficult trials.
