Five Tips For Surviving Kojima's Stealth-Oriented Open-World

Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima may not be slinking along the halls of E3 2015, but his legacy is present in the form of MGS 5: The Phantom Pain. I got my hands on the game for the first time today after seeing it over a year ago in Tokyo for our MGS V cover story. I've completed MGS V: Ground Zeroes a few times in the meantime, so I was ready to take those skills into the open world of Afghanistan on the hunt for one of Big Boss' comrades.

5. Grenade Communications Arrays Around Enemy Bases

Getting spotted is frustrating in the moment, but Big Boss is more than capable of eliminating a single alerted soldier. Problem is, sometimes those nosey enemies call in backup before the legendary soldier can take them out. Even the most skilled players can find themselves on thin ice when trucks of reinforcements roll up. Prevent this by taking out the communications dishes around smaller bases, which will sever their lines with enemy headquarters. Long-distance grenade tosses do the trick nicely. Once they're out, you should be able to clear out bases without worrying about clown cars filled with bad guys showing up.

Dive Into Your Own Dungeons

The concept of Sword Coast Legends always intrigued me, but I really wasn't sure how the sandbox-style build-your-own-adventure would play out in reality. Today at E3 I had some hands-on time with the game, and I really enjoyed it. A team of four of us took on the Dungeon Master (Also handled by another player, controlling a swarm of spiders, a host of traps, a massive boss, and other surprises) and crawled through a quickly hand-crafted dungeon complete with all the staples you'd expect from a real-deal Dungeons & Dragons campaign.

While the game has other aspects to it, this "build a campaign" feature feels like the next evolution of Dungeons & Dragons. Forget hours of setup and boxes full of pieces – everything you could ever want to play with is available here. I can definitely see this being used to host D&D games, especially for playgroups that may have become separated over the years as people move from place to place; all you have to do is log on voice chat and boom, you may as well be in the DM's living room.

I played as a dwarven rogue, fond of drink and stabby-style abilities. My ability to search and disarm traps was instrumental to the group's survival as we moved through the dungeon, and I'll admit I was probably too far ahead of the group in a lot of cases, placing me in harms way often.

Update: I talked to Konami today about Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain's forward operating bases, how they tie into your single-player Mother Base, and what I got wrong about the FOBs in relation to Metal Gear Online. The new intel is inside!

First off, I want to apologize that I got FOBs wrong. I'm sorry. Here's the (real) deal: FOBs are indeed extensions of you Mother Base, but they are solely related to the single-player title, not Metal Gear Online. You can attack friend's FOBs, and if they're playing and online at the time, you can fight them on an FOB. If they're not online then you'll just battle against the A.I. staff at the FOB. You cannot attack a friend's FOB if they aren't online.

Konami's not talking about what you can specifically extract from an FOB, but a representative I talked did say you could steal staff and weapons from an FOB.

Is Ghost Recon Wildlands The Next Blockbuster Shooter?

After three games exploring the future of warfare, the Ghost Recon series is back in a modern day setting for Wildlands. Set four years in the future, the game drops four elite military operatives into Bolivia, which has been turned into a narco state thanks to the Mexican drug cartel Santa Blanca and a corrupt government. The ghosts' job? Disrupt this nefarious alliance by picking away at their power base in the largest open world Ubisoft has ever made.

Our first demo of the game shows off the four-player drop-ion/drop-out cooperative play. The ghosts are tracking one Luis "El Chango" Alvarez, a Santa Blanca cartel member who has some valuable information the ghosts need. The fetch mission is made more complicated because the cartel knows he's a snitch and has imprisoned him in a cage in a remote location. At the start of the mission, the four players are split up doing their own thing. The huge open world allows players to wander on their own, but Ubisoft reps told us that your chances of survival decrease greatly the more you wander alone. In this instance, they are simply trekking in vast expanses of empty territory. Experience points are awarded as they uncover new locations, which feeds into the progression system.

The Dead Walk Again In E3 VR Experience Trailer

A new trailer for Overkill’s The Walking Dead has been released, using both live-action and in-game footage to advertise the game’s most recent VR-focused demo. Don’t worry though; this trailer doesn’t mean Overkill’s The Walking Dead will be appearing exclusively on VR. The cooporative shooter many TWD fans have been hoping for is still being developed independent of any VR spinoff that may pop up.

Another Etrian Odyssey is on the way. Expect some punishing battles and more cartography.

One of the biggest criticisms of Etrian Odyssey has always been its bare-bones story. In 2013, Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl launched, which was a remake of the first Etrian Odyssey with a greater emphasis on narrative. Now Atlus has another game coming in the Untold series, The Fafnir Knight. This is a remake of the second Etrian Odyssey game, Heroes of Lagaard. Again, more story and character moments will be at the forefront. 

The latest trailer shows off more of the story, character interactions, and gameplay. 

A Massive War Brews In New Fire Emblem Fates Trailer And Screens

This flashy new trailer for Fire Emblem Fates sets the stage for the conflict between the Hoshido and Nohr factions. Which side will you choose?

Fire Emblem Fates is the 12th main installment in Intelligent Systems' tactical RPG series, and is comprised of two separate games, each of which details the war from the side of one of the opposing factions. A third story will be available as DLC sometime after launch. The trailer below sells the personal drama between the various characters, and shows a few glimpses of the actual combat.

Actually, War Changes Sometimes

BattleCry, the first project from Bethesda's aptly-named BattleCry Studios, takes place in an alternate history where wars are fought in multiplayer team-based arenas called WarZones. A new batch of screens from E3 show off warriors from the game's three factions and a battlefield set in a shipping yard.

The folks in red are the Imperial Marines. The Han Republic is in green, and the Cossack Empire is represented with yellow. BattleCry has five classes: Enforcer, Brawler, Ranger, Duelist, and Gadgeteer. Each class has different equipment based on the empire they represent, as well as a different name and backstories. Similar to Blizzard's Overwatch, these are characters and not just classes.

One of these WarZones is explored in the screens as well. Based on the color scheme and architecture, the riverside town might be in Han Republic territory.

The Rules Of Tennis Don't Apply

Mario and friends are back on the court, sporting a flagrant disregard for the rules of tennis. A new batch of screens and a trailer highlight the absurdity. 

Curve shots, giant characters, and flaming scorch marks (mind the grass, guys!) prove the Mario Tennis series still prioritizes frantic fun over actual tennis, and that's fine by me. Granted, the supersized characters seem like overkill, but the visuals look great. The biggest foul? Toadstool is refereeing and playing – even if it's a different Toadstool, it's a major conflict of interest. It's like they don't even take the game seriously!
