Five Ups, Five Downs - The Good And Bad Of Battleborn Right Now

about X hours ago from

A few weeks ago, I had the chance to go hands on with Battleborn again. The preview consisted of a new co-op story mission, our first opportunity to see how missions play out in single-player, and two multiplayer modes.

In many ways, playing Battleborn is like walking into a house that’s a fixer-upper. I can see the potential. The game has good “bones.” It just needs some love.

Gearbox has time to improve upon the things that work and fix the elements that aren't coming together yet. Here are five of the strong points and another five elements that need some attention before the game's February 9, 2016 launch.

Meet A Giant Mouse In The First Extensive Gameplay Trailer

PlayStation and Media Molecule showed off an extensive first look at the gameplay of Dreams at the Paris Games Week event today. The demo showed off a verdant forest and spooky crypt the player can interact with.

Creative Director Mark Healey and Technical Director Alex Evans demoed Dreams in a new video. The demo featured the “Imp,” a primary tool of the game’s creation and manipulation engine.

The player character, in this case a cutesy bipedal bear, enters a gentle meadow, where the player can place objects like trees and manipulate the environment. Once inside a spooky crypt, the player meets a gargantuan mouse. The final portion features a massive mountain of cake the player can manipulate, including constructing a bridge of pink wafers to reach the top.

Card Games And Tactical RPGs Collide In Labyrinth

about X hours ago from

The astounding success of Hearthstone has kicked off a gold rush in the digital collectible-card-game genre, and upcoming games like Duelyst and 5th Cell's recently announced Anchors In The Drift are exploring ways to blend CCG mechanics into other experiences. Genre fans can add a promising new project from Free Range Games to their list of anticipated titles. Labyrinth is an upcoming free-to-play roleplaying game that sports an intriguing mash-up of deck building, turn-based strategy combat, and the ability to design and populate your own dungeon.

Cards, Combat, And Loot

At first glance, Labyrinth's gameplay will look familiar to any fan of tactical RPGs. You assemble a party of heroes and lead them through multi-tiered dungeons, taking on minions and (eventually) bosses in turn-based combat that requires deft ability management, positioning, and coordination among your team members. However, nearly everything in Labyrinth is ruled by decks. Players will build individual decks for each party member, comprised of attack, spell, and equipment cards from that character's discipline(s).

Block Out Some Time For Minecraft: Story Mode’s Second Episode This Week

Usually, we have to wait a little while between Telltale episodes. Not so with Minecraft: Story Mode. You can dig in starting today.

The developer has been crafty, ensuring that Episode Two - Assembly Required is ready alongside the release of the game’s season pass disc. That hits retail today, giving players on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3 (also PC in Europe) the opportunity to own a physical version of the game.

Roller Coaster Tycoon World Enters Beta This Weekend

Roller Coaster Tycoon World isn’t leaving the station until December, but faithful fans can start playing this weekend. Atari is planning its first beta weekend to begin this Friday, October 30.

Anyone that has already purchased the game via Steam will be in the beta automatically. If you ordered directly from Atari, you’ll need to activate your copy on Steam. This test will focus on roller coaster building, so the financial model and peeps (your park visitors) won’t be active during this weekend.

You will be able to use the entire coaster building toolset, simulation, physics, first-person riding, scenery you can place in your park, and more will be featured. You’ll only have access to the forest scenery type this time out, though.

Crafting a Superstar or Diva in WWE games can be a painstaking process. This year, 2K is offering a way to fast-track the process with a mobile face-scanning app.

The WWE 2K16 Creation Studio app will launch soon, offering players a way to import their face and logos into the game. Additionally, you’ll be able to import faces and logos via the web-based manager, just like last year.

The app is schedule to launch some time after the game. WWE 2K16 will be out tomorrow on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3.

Ninja Thoery Explains, But Doesn't Show The Secret Face-Scanning Tech Of Hellblade

about X hours ago from

Developer Ninja Theory contracted a company called 3Lateral to scan the face of the model for Hellblade's protagonist, Senua, and it explains, but does not show the process in a new video.

The company 3Lateral doesn't want to share their secrets, so you won't see the technology, but it is apparently so big, that 3Lateral had to rent an apartment near its studios and use that to build the technology. Melina Juergens, whose face was scanned to represent Senua, explains that getting into the mystery contraption felt like getting into a spaceship, and she had to sign onto Skype while inside in order to communicate with everybody.

As mentioned previously, we don't get to see 3Lateral's mystery face-scanning spaceship machine, but we do get to see the results, and they do impress.

LucasArts' Time-Traveling Nerds Get An HD Makeover

about X hours ago from

It's almost been a year since developer/publisher Double Fine announced it obtained the rights to produce a remastered version of the '93 LucasArts hit Day of the Tentacle. The HD edition of the sequel to Ron Gilbert's Maniac Mansion is slated to release later this year, but fans will be able to play it early at Indiecade in Los Angeles, CA. A collection of new, colorful, pixel-free screens are also ready for you to enjoy.

Day of the Tentacle stars an intrepid group of lovable nerds who travel through time with the hope to foil the world-dominating plans of the evil Purple Tentacle. The point-and-click adventure game was a critical hit when it released in the early '90s, and put developer Tim Schafer's name on the map (and the front of the box). Now the game has found a new home at Schafer's studio, Double Fine, which sets next to its fellow LucasArts IP: Grim Fandango.

Indiecade is being held in Los Angeles now, running from October 22 to 25. Learn more about the independent games-focused event at the Indiecade website. Can't make the event? Don't worry! Just take a gander at the cartoony, HD screenshots in the gallery below.
