LucasArts' Time-Traveling Nerds Get An HD Makeover

about X hours ago from

It's almost been a year since developer/publisher Double Fine announced it obtained the rights to produce a remastered version of the '93 LucasArts hit Day of the Tentacle. The HD edition of the sequel to Ron Gilbert's Maniac Mansion is slated to release later this year, but fans will be able to play it early at Indiecade in Los Angeles, CA. A collection of new, colorful, pixel-free screens are also ready for you to enjoy.

Day of the Tentacle stars an intrepid group of lovable nerds who travel through time with the hope to foil the world-dominating plans of the evil Purple Tentacle. The point-and-click adventure game was a critical hit when it released in the early '90s, and put developer Tim Schafer's name on the map (and the front of the box). Now the game has found a new home at Schafer's studio, Double Fine, which sets next to its fellow LucasArts IP: Grim Fandango.

Indiecade is being held in Los Angeles now, running from October 22 to 25. Learn more about the independent games-focused event at the Indiecade website. Can't make the event? Don't worry! Just take a gander at the cartoony, HD screenshots in the gallery below.

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash introduced a number of changes to the traditional Mario Tennis formula. Characters can perform the game's signature Ultra Smash shots by leaping into the air to hit powerful downward strikes. Gameplay modes include Classic Tennis, Online Multiplayer, Mega Battle, and Knockout Challenge, a tiered set of single-player matches against progressively stronger computer opponents. Mega Battle will give characters access to Mega Mushrooms to power up for increased strength.

Players can partner with amiibos to face off against human opponents online or A.I. tennis players in the offline Knockout Challenge mode. The figures will sharpen their skills the more matches they play. Compatible amiibos include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, Yarn Yoshis, Rosalina, Wario, Toad, and Donkey Kong.

Learn Where Yakuza's Old And New Cast Members Find Themselves Now

Updates have been sparse on the upcoming fifth installment of the action-adventure Yakuza franchise, but new details from Sega shine light on where the series' cast currently find themselves. New character details are also revealed, including a shady former baseball player.

Yakuza 5 features five playable characters in five different Japanese cities. After the events of Yakuza 4, series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu finds himself working as a cab driver in Fukuoka, retired from the Yakuza lifestyle. When his junior and the Sixth Chairman of the Tojo Clan go missing, Kiryu finds himself reluctantly pulled back into the mix.

Taiga Saejima, the imposing Yakuza enforcer introduced in Yakuza 4, was previously sentenced to 25 years for allegedly murdering 18 rival gang members. Now reincarcerated, Saejima is content to serve out his sentence in peace, until circumstances force his hand and his survival skills are tested in the harsh winters of Hokkaido.
