WWII-Themed Battlefield V Drops October 19, Abandons Paid Expansion Model

After years of using the paid-expansion-pack model for delivering new post-release content to Battlefield players, DICE is going a new direction with Battlefield V.

Today DICE revealed Tides of War, a new live-service approach to content for Battlefield V that promises fresh challenges, modes, maps, narrative moments, and rewards every few months. This event-based model clearly takes inspiration from other shooters like Overwatch and Rainbow Six Siege, which have continued to grow and expand their player bases with a steady trickle of new content. The benefit of this approach compared to the old paid-expansion model is it keeps the community together instead of fragmenting them into haves and have-nots. This should keep servers busier for more maps. DICE plans to roll these out in a chapter format, taking players to new fronts set in World War II, expanding their knowledge of the great conflict, and introducing new experiences that fit the theme of the chapter.

Korean Ratings Board Suggests Sunset Overdrive Might Be Coming To PC

The Korean Ratings Board, which publicly lists ratings for games and thus inadvertently leaks games ahead of announcement, has revealed a listing for Sunset Overdrive on PC.

Gematsu reports the rating, though not a lot of other details are currently available. In a community Q&A on the forum Resetera, Insomniac community director James Stevenson commented on the possibility of Xbox One X enhancements for Sunset Overdrive a few weeks ago.

"Realistically it’s not in the cards at this point," Stevenson answered. "Our engine code is several years developed from Sunset Overdrive, and to re-open that project and try to piece it in there, on a new piece of hardware, plus all of the testing and resources going into it, isn’t something we’re able to do in house. Right now everyone here is focused on Marvel’s Spider-Man."

The NPD Group: God Of War Topped The April Charts With Its Record Launch

The NPD Group released its April report today, sharing some great news for Sony. God of War was April's best-selling game, but even more exciting is that it set a new record for highest-ever sales by dollar in a launch month for a PlayStation exclusive game.

With God of War's success, Sony earned its place as April's top-selling publisher. However, Ubisoft still has the lead for the top revenue-generating publisher this year, with Far Cry 5 being the second best-selling game of April. MLB 18: The Show earned third place, only behind God of War for best-selling exclusive. The Nintendo Labo Variety Kit also made it into the top four, while the Robot Kit only ranked at number 21.

Some other cool stats to consider: April's overall spending across all video game hardware, software accessories, and game cards grew 18 percent compared to a year ago, with gains across all categories. Hardware spending also increased for April 2018, increasing 14 percent, with gains for Xbox One, PS4, and Plug 'N Play devices such as the SNES Classic.  The PS4 earned the highest April unit sales for a console since the Nintendo Wii in April 2009.
