Fortnite Season 5 Is Here, And It Brought Golf Carts

Golf carts, portals, a new biome, and more come to Fortnite: Battle Royale as part of its fifth season. The announcement trailer and patch notes emphasize the "worlds collide" tagline, drawing on Fortnite's recent weird crossovers with the real world.

The season update brings a new vehicle, the all-terrain kart, to Battle Royale mode. The kart has room for four players, grants a speed boost after drifting, and has a roof that acts as a bounce pad.

Portals called Rifts also come to Battle Royale. Walking or driving through a Rift will send you high into the sky, as Twitter user MetalRose demonstrates.

Reinforcements Arrive For Battalion 1944

Early Access WWII title Battalion 1944 is getting a major overhaul starting today, changing the core competitive mode, overhauling the player models, and adding a progression system.

Major Update 2 is out of beta and the main round-based competitive mode, Wartide 2.0, ditches the old card system, adds a vertical-orientated Savoia, Italy map, reworks existing maps, tweaks gameplay, and changes the U.I.

Battlerank, meanwhile, is the new cosmetic progression system based around seasons. Rewards like weapon skins are only available during the season, and these can be sold/traded on the community market. Leveling up your Battlerank via XP earned through gameplay also rewards you with a free war chest.

The Witcher Tabletop Game Gallops Toward Release

Earlier this month, CD Projekt Red's CEO Adam Kiciński said that there are more stories left to tell in the Witcher-verse. It looks like your first taste of that is coming soon, though maybe not in the form you're expecting.

R. Talsorian Games, the tabletop developer behind Cyberpunk (the series that CD Projekt Red is adapting into a game), is developing a tabletop game based around The Witcher. You can find out all sorts of details about how the game will differ from its digital predecessor.

The game will be available at Gen Con on August 2. If you're not attending the conference, you'll also be able to buy the game online at DriveThruRPG.com.

Where's Our Octopath Traveler Review?

Where's Our Octopath Traveler Review?

Octopath Traveler releases tomorrow on Switch, and reviews are hitting now. However, the final verdict from Game Informer isn’t ready yet. It’s a long adventure; I’m 50 hours in, but I want to make sure I finish the story and see all of the tales conclude before finalizing a score. So look for our full review sometime next week!

Setting aside the mystery of the overall narrative payoff, I can say that my general impressions of the rest of the game are positive so far. The structure is novel, the visuals are fantastic, and the combat system is clever. I especially love the depth and strategy of battle, particularly in the numerous boss fights. If you’re already interested in Octopath Traveler and think you will like it (especially after playing the demos), you are probably right.

However, the focus on eight individual stories is a double-edged sword. It gives specific characters time in the spotlight, but also limits the sense of camaraderie and cooperation among the heroes. I’ve also hit some pacing issues, where boring grinding is required to hit the level threshold for the next wave of story content. I know that most JRPG fans expect a degree of this, but that doesn’t make it fun.

Fortnite Season 5 Begins Tomorrow

Just a heads up for Fortnite players ahead of season five tomorrow, you can expect to finally find out what Epic has been cooking over the last month for the new season.

The exact hour of season five can be hard to pin down. Season four officially concludes at 1:00 AM PST on July 12, so just a few scant hours from now. After that, downtime begins that will last for an indeterminate amount of time until season five begins.

That time could be an hour or it could be more than that. Depends on how long it takes Epic to pull the lever and push the button. Epic has said this patch size will be a little larger than normal.

Fortnite Streamer Vikkstar123 Builds A Roller Coaster In The Game

Fortnite is a game about building and like all building accomplishments – Minecraft, real life – it has all just built to building roller coasters.

Vikkstar is well known for pulling off some amazing stuff with Fortnite, so a roller coaster built around Tilted Towers and powered by a shopping cart seemed inevitable. Check out the video below.

What more is there to build now? Stone Henge? Even bigger roller coasters? We'll need to keep reaching for that brass ring to find out.

Jessica Price, Fired ArenaNet Writer, Speaks Out After Termination

A few days ago, Guild Wars developer ArenaNet, terminated two writers from their team after what CEO Mike O'Brien described as failing to "uphold standards of communicating with players." The event started when writer Jessica Price was engaged by a streamer on her personal Twitter account, which Price found offensive. You can read more details in the original story here.

Today, after a break from social media, Price decided to comment on the aftereffects of the firing rather than whether or not the firing was just in the first place. In a series of tweets, Price explains that ArenaNet erred in how they framed her termination.

Hi, everyone. I've got a thing to say and then I'm going back off Twitter for a bit because I've had a vacation planned for a while and I intend to take it to the fullest.

In an interview with Buzzfeed, The Last of Us Part II director Neil Druckmann hinted a tiny bit at whether Ellie will be going it alone in the man-turned-monster horrorland.

When questioned about the heart of NPCs and making one of the best NPC partners of all time in Ellie, Druckmann decided to spill a bean or two about the gameplay and story.

"Well, so, Ellie used to be an NPC, but she’s the protagonist in this story, so the player is controlling Ellie," Druckmann said. "Umm, it’s safe to say with the game that we made in the past that there will be some NPC with you in this story, even though we’re not showing [the NPC] in this demo. And our general approach is to say, again, How do we treat them like people? How do we get them to behave honestly as those people? How do we give them interesting characteristics so that they can navigate the world, make meaningful actions, and surprise you in the way people do?"
