WayForward And Arc System Works Announce Female Follow-Up To River City Ransom

There have been rumors for a few months now about a new title in the River City Ransom series, based off the 1989 Kunio-Kun brawler on the NES. While lots of names were tossed around, Arc System Works seemed to stick more than most, as they are the current owners of the River City/Kunio-Kun license. Instead, it seems that Arc System Works is partnering with indie developer WayForward for a new game in the series called River City Girls.

The press release is scant on details, as the two companies say they do not plan to show anything off until later this year, but it does confirm the title and that it is based on the classic series. WayForward's founder and self-described tyrannical overlord Voldi Way, who is in fact a real person, remarked that the game's female protagonist is what won him over. WayForward tends to feature female protagonists in a lot of their games, like Shantae or Mighty Switch Force.

River City Ransom is a classic beat 'em up that featured some RPG elements like skill upgrades and shopping at stores within the game world. It's also well known for its terse and comical translation, which includes enemies saying "BARF" when hit in the stomach. In 2017, a semi-sequel was released for modern platforms by Conatus Creative.

A Remake Of PS2-Era Shooter XIII Is Coming This November

XIII, based on the 1984 graphic novel of the same name, released on PlayStation 2, Xbox, Gamecube, and PC in 2003 and didn't quite set the world on fire. But the cel-shaded look – meant to emulate its comic book roots – helped the game stand out at the time.

Now, 16 years later, the game is being remade for modern audiences, coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, and Mac on November 13. Previously published by Ubisoft, the remake is being handled by French publisher Microïds and developed by Playmagic. They released a couple prototype images that imply the cel-shaded look will be making a return, but the teaser trailer sets the tone for the story more than anything else.

This will be a direct remake of the original XIII game which followed the story arc from the first five issues of the graphic novel. No word on whether or not David Duchovny will reprise his role as XIII, but as, sadly, Adam West passed away in 2017, the role of General Carrington will presumably be recast.

Darli Dagger Gets First Gameplay Trailer For Samurai Shodown

Darli Dagger, the first new Samurai Shodown fighter in years, was revealed during PAX East earlier this month, but no footage was shown at the time. SNK today gave us a glimpse of her moveset and style in her reveal trailer.

Darli is a pirate fighter that, after washing ashore as a young girl, learned to defend herself against dangerous local pirates. Fortunately her defense is aided by a gigantic saw blade and some sort of large drill.

Samurai Shodown comes to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this June. You can watch us play the game in a recent episode of New Gameplay Today.

Mortal Kombat 11's Launch Trailer Goes All In On Nostalgia And Techno

Anyone who's seen the (surprisingly solid) 1995 Mortal Kombat film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson probably has its techno-laced theme pounded in their head.  The latest trailer for Mortal Kombat 11, due out next week, weaponizes the nostalgia attached to that ridiculous (and ridiculously catchy) theme song to great effect:
