Nintendo President Says They Are Not Considering A Switch Successor Or Price Cut Yet

The Switch has had an incredibly successful 2018 in terms of hardware and software sales. The hybrid system finished the year as the best selling hardware in North America and game sales have been breaking records, even at the price of $300, traditionally thought to be above the threshold for mainstream adoption. It seems like Nintendo is not eager to shake things up too heavily, at least according to the company's president Shuntaro Furukawa.

In an interview with Japanese newspaper The Sankei News and translated by Nintendo Everything, Furukawa is sticking to his guns on the 20 million units prediction for the Switch he made for this financial year. With Christmas over and another few months to go, though, the question has to be asked if Furukawa plans to incentivize new Switch sales through a price cut or revision.

"It is an extremely ambitious, but worthwhile achievement," Furukawa said. "So, we will maintain this goal. Nintendo Switch is our primary sales objective, and we are not considering a successor or a price cut at this time."

Fortnite Removes Blind Loot Boxes From Save The World Mode

Fortnite Removes Blind Loot Boxes From Save The World Mode

Loot boxes have been a controversial topic over the last few years. They've always been a controversial topic, really, but in the face of games like Battlefront II and even Overwatch, the discussion around them has really heated up, with the video game industry insisting there's nothing wrong with them. National governments are getting involved in the discussion, though, which is putting pressure on individual developers to start tuning them to be more consumer-friendly. Perhaps as a consequence of that, Epic announced today that they will be replacing the previously purchasable loot boxes in Fortnite's Save the World mode with loot boxes that allow you to see their contents before you buy.

Dubbed X-Ray Llamas, the llamas (boxes) show you exactly what you're going to get before you buy them, Epic explained in a blog post today. If you don't see anything you like, the store will refresh the next day and the loot box with it. The prices aren't changing and the boxes can still be earned through gameplay, but they'll be similarly transparent in those.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Version 2.0 Is Coming Next Week

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is getting a big update, "within the next week." At least, we assume it's a big update, considering the game is going from version 1.2.1 to 2.0.0.

If you log into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate today you will see the alert for the looming update which suggests you save your favorite replays before the update goes live. The previous updates, which you can see the full patch notes for here, were mostly small. The most recent update only offered "Various fixes to improve gameplay."

Hopefully this update will add Piranha Plant to the game as we still don't know exactly when that fighter will be added outside of a vague February release window. And speaking of Piranha Plant, make sure to take the necessary steps you need in order to get him now as the window is closing.

Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain Releasing In April

Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain Releasing In April

Earth Defense Force is an odd series. The aggressively and proudly budget games arguably mix camp and compulsion in ways very few games can manage. At one point in the past, developer Sandlot and publisher D3 tried to tune the game more to western fans, but eventually went back to tried-and-true Earth Defense Force up through the recent Earth Defense Force 5. Now D3 is taking another stab at a more serious Earth Defense Force game with Iron Rain, which they've announced will be releasing worldwide on April 11.

The game, developed by WWE 2K studio Yuke's, is an attempt at a higher budget and higher fidelity Earth Defense Force that takes itself a little more seriously. It might be better to just watch the new trailer to see what it's all about.

It will be interesting to see how Iron Rain compares to other EDF games. The changes might just be what the series needs, as our review of Earth Defense Force 5 argues that the series is growing a little stale over the years.
