Kickstarter Game Funding Down Dramatically In 2014

Despite the continued hype surrounding crowdfunding, Kickstarter pledges for video game projects are slumping so far in 2014.

An article in CVG cites a new study by ICO Partners analyst Thomas Bidaux, comparing the pace of Kickstarter funding in 2013 to this year so far. Right now, $13.5 million has been pledged to Kickstarter game projects. If the current pace continues, that will end the year's total at approximately $27 million. In comparison, game Kickstarters raised over $58 million in 2013.

Bidaux speculates that the gap is due in part to the fact that 2013 had some wildly successful projects like Mighty No. 9 and Torment: Tides of Numeria and speculates that some high-profile Kickstarter failures have made consumers more skeptical about crowdfunding.

Test Drive A New Lexus With The Oculus Rift

The luxury carmaker is letting prospective owners "test drive" its new RC F car with the Oculus Rift.

The company created this demo, a perfect scale representation of the car's interior, for the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in Monterey, California. By strapping on the Oculus, and using the provided steering wheel and pedals, users can take the RC F for a spin on a virtual 3D racetrack. Pretty neat.

Spend $100 On The PlayStation Store And Get $15 Credit Back

Sony announced today that anyone who spends more than $100 on the PlayStation Store in the month of October will get $15 back as a part of a new digital promotion. Starting today any purchases on the PlayStation Store will be counted toward the promotion.

This includes games that have already released, as well as preorders for upcoming games like Far Cry 4 and Dragon Age: Inquisition. According to the press release all PS4 and PS3 games offer automatic pre-load, allowing pre-ordered games to be downloaded before the release date. The offer ends on October 28, and Sony says users can expect to get their $15 voucher before November 7. For more info, check out the full blog post here.

Our TakeI’ve always preferred to buy physical copies of my games, but this is one heck of a deal for anyone who loves buying digitally. The fact that it includes preorders is really cool, offering incentive to lock down those purchases early.

The Novi Aquillis skin is a good fit for the stealthy, cloaking Neo. Templars can paint up the Fortis saucer Airmech in Abstergo colors, making the abducting craft a force for evil.

Players can also bring three Assassin’s Creed-themed pets into battle. The spirit eagle, apple of Eden, and DNA cube vial are all available for purchase. More skins and updates to the maps are coming soon, too.

Obsidian Delays Pillars Of Eternity Into 2015

Bad news RPG fans, Obsidian and publisher Paradox have announced that Pillars of Eternity has been delayed. The title will now arrive sometime in early 2015.

Pillars of Eternity was successfully funded on Kickstarter with nearly $4 million raised against a goal of $1.1 million. The game was originally slated for delivery in April 2014 and then delayed to this winter in February of this year.

"Since the very beginning of this project we promised our fans and ourselves that we would release this game only when we knew it would be absolutely ready for the best experience possible,” writes Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart. “We're very close to that point, but not quite there yet. The feedback we have received through our playtest process has been invaluable to us. We are coming into the home stretch but are pushing the release out just a bit to make sure we honor that promise we made originally. Thanks for your patience and support, it will be worth the wait."

The Banner Saga is a strategy RPG with a Viking theme, which we quite liked when it arrived in January 2014. You can read our review here. The iOS version is available in the app store for $9.99.

Our TakeStoic says it designed the game with touch devices in mind, which means that this port should be fairly fluid. With this and XCOM on an iPad, strategy fans can easily get their fix on the go.
