Bungie Explains Destiny’s Mysterious Third Subclass Slot

We recently visited Bungie to talk with the developer about Destiny’s first expansion. We came away with some extensive details about what’s on the way in The Dark Below, which are chronicled here. We also quizzed the developers about some of the big questions surrounding the game, like the issue of non-skippable cutscenes, and the way exotic bounties affect the competitive experience; you can read Bungie’s responses in this month’s magazine issue. We also asked lead designer Tyson Green about the often rumored third subclass slot on each guardian’s character screen, and he clarified what’s really going on there.

“I can’t say anything about new subclasses,” Green says. “The reason why there’s that third subclass slot there, is that some people may recall that we used to have a mechanism for sealing a build and locking your choices in, which would give your build a boost. The game would let you make another copy of that build. That’s what the slot is there for. When you needed to make a copy of your arc titan build because you just locked the other one, we had to make room for that. So that’s why the third slot is there. It shouldn’t be read as a tacit promise, but the fact that subclasses are swappable should make players excited about the future.”

Crytek Pins Blame For Warface Xbox 360 Cancelation On Microsoft

Following Tuesday's announcement that Crytek will end Warface on Xbox 360 after less than a year, we reached out to the developer for more information. In response, a company representative told us that the decision to cease work on the game came from Microsoft.

“With Microsoft acting as publisher for Warface on Xbox 360, we are bound by their decision to phase out the game on their console,” a Crytek representative told us. “We appreciate their efforts in supporting Warface up to this point, but, like the many players we're hearing from, are sad to see the game leave from Xbox 360.” We were also directed to a post on the Xbox Forums reiterating this point.

In a question-and-answer section of the Warface cancelation announcement, a community moderator shares the reasoning for the termination. “We’re always evaluating our portfolio to ensure that the experiences available on Xbox suit the needs of our community,” he writes. “Player demand and creative direction sometimes mandate that we shift our focus onto other games and opportunities.

Angry Birds Developer Rovio Lays Off Fewer Than Expected

In October, Angry Birds devloper Rovio announced layoffs amounting to 15 percent of the company’s workforce. The impact is less than that, with 110 (rather than 130) employees affected.

In addition to the layoffs, the company is also closing one of its studios. Its Finland operations will be consolidated, and the developer’s Tampere location will be shuttered.

Rovio recently launched two new titles in the Angry Birds line, including a licensing deal with Hasbro for Angry Birds Transformers. The company is also working on a movie starring Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Peter Dinklage, and Maya Rudolph.

about X hours ago from

Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham's roster will be growing further in early 2015, with the reveal that the Suicide Squad is joining the game – minus the word "Suicide." The story-based DLC will add new characters and vehicles to the game.

According to Warner Bros., The Squad DLC follows the group – including Deathstroke, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Amanda Waller, and El Diablo – as they work to discover who has broken into Belle Reve Penitentiary.

The download is part of the game's $14.99 season pass, just like with the recently announced Bizarro World DLC. If you don't want to pick up the season pass but you're really into the Suicide Squad, you can download it individually for $2.99.

Next Borderlands DLC Brings Back Memories Of Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot

about X hours ago from

2K Games, Gearbox, and 2K Australia have announced the second of four planned major DLC packs for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Last time out, the team delivered a new playable character, the Handsome Jack Doppelgänger. Now, we’re going back to the future (and then back to the middle of the series in a flashback).

The Holodome Onslaught is a story expansion positioned as playable character Athena recounting details to Borderlands 2’s Axton and Gaige. The gameplay sounds more like the Borderlands’ series most disappointing DLC, unfortunately. Yes, we’re talking about Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot.

In the new DLC, players will take on waves of foes to earn new weapons, class mods, heads, and skins. But wait, there’s more.

Haden Blackman, project lead on Star Wars Galaxies and The Force Unleashed, is leading a new studio within 2K to work on an unannounced new-gen project.

The studio, called Hangar 13, is currently expanding with the intention of entering the AAA game development space. Though its game is a mystery, it sounds like it will be an experience with a very malleable, player-driven story.

In a press release announcing the new studio Blackman wrote, “At Hangar 13, our mantra is ‘Every player story is unique. Our ambition is to create next-generation games that allow players to shape their own experiences, from the moment-to-moment gameplay, to the long-term impact on the world, characters and narrative. To realize this goal, we’re building proprietary technology and assembling a core team passionate about delivering mature experiences loaded with meaningful choices.”
