Reader Discussion: Do You Prefer Open World Or Linear Experiences?

Reader Discussion: Do You Prefer Open World Or Linear Experiences?

There's plenty of room for both types of games, but do you have a preference?

One of the themes of my personal top five games of last generation list was how much I enjoy linear, directed experiences. I love games like The Last of Us and Half-Life 2 that have dedicated paths leading to specific storytelling and gameplay moments, but I have also been playing a lot of Far Cry 4 the last few weeks and have been having a great time.

What type of game do you prefer? Or do you like having a cross-section of both?

Throwing Knife Surgeon Kills 24 In Two Minutes In Far Cry 4

YouTube user Frank Zappa (who is probably not the famous musician, though I haven't confirmed) is a pro with Far Cry 4's throwing knife, and proves it by rampaging through De Pleur's fortress without alerting a single soldier. It's an impressive display, even if you haven't been playing Far Cry 4.

You can check out the video below, which handily earns its title The Ninja of Kyrat.

‘The Faces Of Skyrim’ Showcases Tamriel’s Most Beautiful Portraiture

It’s almost hard to believe that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is over three years old already. It still appears on Steam’s top 10 most played games list and modders continue to make the game more beautiful.

Andy Cull shared with us his work curating some of the most beautiful images taken from the snowy wilds of Skyrim. Cull tells us that all of the images have been taken directly from the game with no touch-up work in Photoshop or other image editing program. There are two galleries of character portraits featuring many (but not all, sorry Khajiit and Argonian fans) of the different races of Tamriel.

In addition, Cull has assembled a gallery of Skyrim landscapes, featuring snowy mountainsides, hazy forests, and craggy ruins. A separate gallery houses images of Skyrim's gorgeous vistas.

District 9 Director Neil Blomkamp Shows Off Art From Abandoned Alien Sequel

about X hours ago from

Last night, the world learned that District 9 director Neil Blomkamp was involved in film project in the Alien universe. We didn’t hear this via press release or an exclusive story in a trade publication. No, Blomkamp shared these himself, which doesn’t bode well for the project.

“Was working on this,” he writes. “Don't think I am anymore. Love it though.” The message includes a link to an Instagram gallery featuring a number of images, including Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley and Michael Biehn’s Corporal Dwayne Hicks (with some nasty scars).

Not much information is available, of course, but it looks like Blomkamp’s take on the Alien-verse would have introduced some changes to the Xenomorph. One of the images shows a change in the Facehuggers and their eggs.
