Nvidia Announces New Shield Microconsole

about X hours ago from

Several Android consoles have come and gone, but that hasn't stopped companies eager to enter the battle for the living room from making them. The latest comes from the graphics experts at Nvidia.

Powered by the Tegra X1, Nvidia says the new Shield microconsole can stream 4K decoded video at 60Hz. Gamers can also stream titles at 1080p/60fps via Nvidia's Grid service. The device is scheduled to launch in May for $199.

Nvidia hopes to have more than 50 games available at launch, including Portal, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, The Witcher 3, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and Crysis 3, among others. Don't expect these non-streamed games to run natively at the full resolution many PC gamers enjoy. Gearbox and Crytek said their games should run at 30fps, however.

Valve Announces Source 2, Steam Link

Valve has used the original Source engine since the days of Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2, but the company used this year's GDC as a platform to announce the successor, Source 2.

The announcement isn't exactly a surprise; years ago, Valve's Gabe Newell confirmed that company was working a new version of the engine. However, the formal announcement means that we have a better idea what the engine can accomplish.

"With Source 2, our focus is increasing creator productivity. Given how important user generated content is becoming, Source 2 is designed not for just the professional developer, but enabling gamers themselves to participate in the creation and development of their favorite games," says Valve's Jay Stelly in a press release.
