Reader Discussion: What Is Your Favorite Type Of Game Setting?

While many gamers will gleefully play games across a variety of settings, deep down in your heart of hearts, you probably have a favorite. Whether it’s the sword and board of fantasy settings or the lasers of space conflict, we want to know which sandbox is your favorite.

As games get larger and more complex, the worlds in which we invest dozens (or hundreds) of hours take shape as omnipresent characters. Perhaps you relate more to The Elder Scrolls Tamriel or Dragon Age’s Thedas. Maybe you prefer the shining future of Mass Effect’s galaxy or the war torn planets Halo predicts.

If you prefer more realistic or contemporary experiences, the vibrant cities of Grand Theft Auto, lush jungles of Far Cry, or even the desolate wasteland portrayed in Fallout could be where you’d spend your vacation. We’re eager to learn where you like to play. Don’t be afraid to get specific.

Report: DeNA Layoffs Impact Vancouver, San Francisco Locations

It appears that mobile developer DeNA has laid off staff in at least two of its locations. The company recently announced a major partnership with Nintendo to bring original games to mobile phones and tablets.

According to GamesBeat, the company says that the decision to reorganize its western offices has nothing to do with the Nintendo deal or the recently released Final Fantasy Record Keeper. Yesterday, DeNA issued a press release stating that the Square Enix partnership title had crossed the 1 million download mark.

DeNA has also produced games based on the Transformers license, and Marvel Comics. We’ve reached out to DeNA for more information and will update should we receive a response.

Heroes Of Newerth Adding Retro-Themed Alternate Avatars

LightGunblade is the first new alternate avatar in Heroes of Newerth’s 8-bit promotion, and the proceeds are contributing to the game’s prize pool at DreamHack this summer.

Based on arcade light-gun games, the LightGunblade variant of Gunblade wields a pair of light guns and features pixelated faces that change dynamically over the course of a match. The first in a series of eight new avatars, LightGunblade is available now for 700 gold (just under $17), with the price rising to 900 gold (just over $21) after a week.

Purchasing the new avatars will also earn players bonus content. Purchase of the first two avatars nets players a ward, the first four a courier, the first six a taunt, and all eight gets players an announcer pack. A quarter of all proceeds from the 8-bit promotion are going to the game's prize pool for its tournament at DreamHack Summer 2015, which runs June 13-16.

Resident Evil Revelations 2 Coming To Vita ‘This Summer’

If you’ve been waiting to play Resident Evil Revelations 2 on the go, you might be wondering what’s going on with that version. Today, Sony director of third party production provided an update on the Vita edition.

Frima Studio, a Canadian developer responsible for Chariot and Zombie Tycoon, is handling the handheld port. Included in the Vita version are the four episodes and single-player raid mode. Online and ad-hoc multiplayer will be patched in after launch.

The Vita version will include gyroscopic targeting to take advantage of the device’s features. It’s currently planned for sometime this summer, but no firm release date (or even a month) has been shared yet.

Bungie Adding ‘Locks’ To Destiny Armory To Prevent Accidental Gear Deletion

about X hours ago from

In this week’s Destiny update, Bungie revealed some more changes coming in the 1.1.2 patch. Unfortunately, all we know about timing is that it will arrive before the House of Wolves expansion.

Bungie is giving users an extra layer of protection for their weapons and armor. When the patch arrives, players will be able to “lock” their gear. By hovering over an item, you’ll be able to click the thumbstick to lock it.

In order to break down a locked item, you need to first unlock it and then compost it for materials. This won’t prevent anyone from maliciously deleting your items either in-person or over share play (which happened not too long ago, as you might recall).

Happy Wars Accidentally Released, Pulled On Xbox One

The Xbox One version of the free-to-play combat game Happy Wars was inadvertently released early last night. It was quickly pulled from the Xbox Marketplace, but not before a number of players noticed and downloaded the game. The release also created a problem for long-time fans of the game, according to developer Toylogic.

Users who downloaded and played the Xbox One version can no longer play its Xbox 360 counterpart, according to a post on the Happy Wars Facebook page. "The issue of Happy Wars for Xbox 360 becoming unplayable will be resolved by the next title update of Happy Wars for Xbox 360," it says in part. "However, if you have already installed and played Happy Wars for Xbox One, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you."

Toylogic says details on the timing of that title update, as well as the official Xbox One release date, will be coming in another announcement. Some people have commented in the Facebook post that an April 24 release date was tagged to the game on Xbox's site. As of this writing, clicking on the Xbox One version of Happy Wars leads to an error message, likely an indication of its hasty removal.
