Valve's Gabe Newell Addressing Questions About Steam's New Ability To Sell Mods

Valve's Gabe Newell is currently engaged in an "ask me anything" session on reddit responding to questions about Valve and Steam's paid mods initiative.

Newell opened the conversations writing, "On Thursday I was flying back from LA. When I landed, I had 3,500 new messages. Hmmm. Looks like we did something to piss off the Internet." after explaining his absence which was related to eye surgery, Newell continued, "So here I am, probably a day late, to make sure that if people are pissed off, they are at least pissed off for the right reasons."

Here are a few of Newell's responses so far. He says he should be able to answer questions for the next hour and a half.

If You Grabbed Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty PS4 With PS Plus, You Will Get The Vita And PS3 Versions Free

Developer Just Add Water originally planned for Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty to only be cross-buy compatible for copies of the game purchased after its PS Plus window, but it has changed its mind.

Writing on its website, the developer talked about changing its mind due to fan feedback:

Developing the other versions of the game is not a simple, cost-free process, and takes time, money and considerable effort. That said, numerous factors (including fan feedback) have prompted us to change our stance on this particular matter. So, if you downloaded New ‘n’ Tasty for PS4 during the PS Plus period, the PS3 and PS Vita versions of the game will be free for download for you on release.

Reader Discussion: How Do You Feel About Selling Mods On Steam?

about X hours ago from

Does Valve's move to open up Steam to modders create a new segment of game development or is it a shameless grab for cash? Do you think you'll buy mods?

Yesterday, Valve announced that modders could start making money off of their work by selling their mods through Steam. Steam Workshop users can now sell community-made mods, items, and maps as long as the original developer allows them. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the first game to open up those floodgates, but there will probably be more.

How do you feel about this turn of events? On one hand, it's nice that those who provide augments to a game might be able to get some compensation for their work. Are you happy about this? Or are you worried about the consumers? Do you feel like they might get nickel and dimed for some thing that used to be free? Perhaps you feel like this is counter to the whole spirit of mods. Should mods be free? In the case of Skyrim mods, modders are only making 25 percent off their work. Do you think this should be more?

Dudes In Hoodies Duke In Out In Real Life Mortal Kombat

Sure, you've seen real-life versions of fighting games a hundred times, but do they every really get old? This real life Mortal Kombat video is pretty fun, even if it commits the classic Hollywood faux pas of having people play a modern game using a classic video game system.

Check out this modern take on Mortal Kombat's classic brawling courtesy of Mr.TVCow. It's an okay video, but hey, what do you want from me. It's Friday night.

Weekend Warrior 04/24/2015

Lately, it seems like Bloodborne is the only game that people have been playing, but that's not going to stop some of us from moving on to other things. It might be a dry season for video games, but we'll keep ourselves busy.

Ben Hanson (@Yozetty) – This weekend I'm going to be replaying the first act of Broken Age before the big release of the second half next week. Outside of that, I'll most likely continue to play and enjoy Affordable Space Adventures on the Wii U and I've been considering giving Heroes of the Storm another go. Oh, and I guess I'll be playing Settlers of Cataan tonight but that barely counts. Have a good weekend!

Andrew Reiner (@Andrew_Reiner) – I’m playing Bloodborne with a friend (we switch off controls after every death) and also hope to finish up watching the first season of Daredevil. I’m also introducing games to my daughter. Right now, she’s experimenting with a number of iOS learning titles. They all suck so far, and I think she’s beginning to deem video games undesirable. I might have to show her Super Mario Bros. soon.

Report: Original Gears Of War Coming To Xbox One

Between Halo's Master Chief Collection and the fact that a new Gears of War game is currently being developed by Black Tusk Studios, fans have been clamoring for a Marcus Fenix Trilogy release that would include remastered versions of Gears of War 1, Gears of War 2, and Gears of War 3 on Xbox One. While a new report won't quite satisfy those fans, it does indicate that Xbox One owners will have the opportunity to play a remastered edition of the original Gears of War.

An unnamed source has told Polygon that Microsoft and Black Tusk are working on remastered edition of the original Gears of War. The remastered version is said to feature enhanced visuals and cutscenes that have been remade by animation studio Plastic Wax.

The original game released on Xbox 360 in 2006, meaning that much like Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, the remastered version of Gears of War could be in development to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the game.
