Reader Discussion: Have You Ever Abandoned A Game You Were Enjoying To Start Another?

about X hours ago from

I have been having a good time with Splatoon and was on the single-player campaign's end boss – but then Batman: Arkham Knight released.

I really don't like having to put down games, especially when I making good progress and having a good time, but sometimes something comes along that you simply can't avoid. Aside from being one of the games I have been most looking forward to in 2015, knowing there was a big spoiler relatively early in the game was like a ticking social media time bomb. I had to see what the fuss was all about, even though Splatoon's credits were only a few minutes away. I have since gone back and knocked out Splatoon's end boss, but not before making sure I got in a few solid Arkham Knight sessions.

How about you? Have you ever dropped one good game to pick up another?

Mario Explores Hyper-Detailed Unreal 4 Environments In Fan Creation

about X hours ago from

In a new video from YouTube user aryoksini, who has been working on a Super Mario 64 remake project for a few years, Mario explores a series of realistic Unreal 4 environments.

According to aryoksini, "All the environment assets were taken from the Unreal marketplace, all the character actions were scripted using blueprints only, all animations were re-created from scratch as well as the PBR ready textures." It's bizarre thing to see. Mario has always offered good-looking games for his era and platform, but to see so much environmental detail juxtaposed against Mario's platforming and cartoonish character model is strange.

[Update] Majesco Entertainment Still Quiet, But It Didn't Acquire An Insurance Company

Update: We're issuing a retraction on this story. The press release we read directly referenced Majesco Entertainment's stock ticker (COOL), but that was an error.

There is another Majesco, a maker of insurance software, which completed a merger with Cover-All. All of the information in the original story regarding Majesco Entertainment's most recent status remains accurate, and we are leaving this story up so those referencing it see the correction. Should Majesco Entertainment update us on its current status, we'll report that in a new story.

We apologize for the error. Thanks to Anthony Grosso for directing us to the correct information.

DS Titles Star Fox Command And Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time Available On Wii U Virtual Console

DS Titles Star Fox Command And Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time Available On Wii U Virtual Console

Star Fox's only original handheld outting (Star Fox 64 3D was a remake) and the Mario & Luigi sequel are both now available as downloadable titles on the Wii U Virtual Console.

With Star Fox Zero and Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam's E3 presence, the release timing of these two games is no accident. We scored Partners in time an 8.25 upon release with Joe Juba writing about the game, "Even though the story itself falls flat (if you’re not Chrono Trigger or Back to the Future, stay an arm’s length from time travel, please), Partners in Time is saved by its colorful cast, addictively simple battle mechanics, and magnetic appeal. It may not be the most emotionally complex RPG on the market, but it’s solid entertainment with a quirky twist."

Star Fox Command is the often forgotten Star Fox title that actually has a tactical angle to it and was directed by Dylan Cuthbert, who was heavily involved in the original Star Fox and its unreleased sequel. Andrew Reiner said of the game at the time, "Star Fox Command isn’t the second coming, but it is a great start to repairing a franchise that had crashed and burned. Let’s hope that Nintendo continues with this formula and adds some length to the wars that unfold in future installments."

Weekend Warrior 6/26/2015

about X hours ago from

Batman: Arkham Knight has finally ended The Witcher 3's month-long iron grip on our lives. While many of us are still enjoying Arkham Knight for the first time, but some have started a second playthough already. What about you? Have you been glued to your sofa, muttering "I'm Batman" under your breath or has another game captured your heart and weekend plans?

Ben Hanson (@Yozetty) – This weekend I'm going camping out in Wisconsin so the only game I'll be playing is how heavily I can coat my body in bug-spray and sunscreen. Maybe I'll bring my 3DS for a little bit of Puzz 'n D.

Tim Turi (@TimTuri) – A dilemma has descended upon me. The madness of E3 and moving to a new place and everything is behind me, so I finally have time to play The Witcher 3. Great, right? Well yeah, but now I also have Batman: Arkham Knight. Last night I finally hit a point in Witcher 3 where I’m feeling really invested in the character progression and overarching story, but am also feeling the magnetic pull of Batman. I love tearing around Gotham in the damned Batmobile! So, this weekend will be dominated by this constant conflict, and hopefully I figure out a good way to juggle both games while squeezing in some Splatoon matches and Lego Jurassic World. Wish me luck, because I’m terrible and juggling games.

Red Dead Redemption Leads Xbox 360 Backward Compatibility Vote

about X hours ago from

Last week Microsoft earned kudos for announcing its plan to make select Xbox 360 games backward compatible with the Xbox One. The tech update is launching with support for 18 titles, but Microsoft is also taking feedback on which games should be included as they expand the library. Now we have a clearer picture of which games are leading the pack.

Right now Rockstar's wild west classic Red Dead Redemption is leading the pack with more than 58,000 votes. Call of Duty: Black Ops II, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Halo Reach round out the top five.

The Call of Duty fan base is certainly the loudest at this juncture – six games from the franchise are currently ranked in the top 15. The Fallout, Gears of War, and Mass Effect games are also well represented.
