The Science Behind Kylo Ren's Lightsaber

The Science Behind Kylo Ren's Lightsaber

Kylo Ren's lightsaber has been the talk of the Star Wars world from the moment it flashed to life in the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. At first glance, it appears to be designed like a claymore, but recently revealed information from a Star Wars exhibit at California's Disneyland shows that the quillons are more exhaust ports than a hand guard.

A plaque at the exhibit for Ren's lightsaber reads: "Kylo Ren's unusual lightsaber is an ancient design, although the one he carries is recently constructed. The crossguard design, or quillons, are raw power vented from the primary central blade." In several shots from the film's newer trailers, we see Ren's saber burning much hotter than a standard saber.

We don't know much about Ren's motivation in Force Awakens yet, but from his saber design to his apparent obsession with Darth Vader, he appears to be exploring the history of the Sith order. We'll know soon enough, however, as Force Awakens opens in theaters on December 17.

Historically, the Thanksgiving holiday has been an opportunity to play video games. And spend time with family or something. What are you focusing on next week?

I may dabble in Fallout 4, try to catch up on the games I don't feel I spent enough time with throughout the year, but my main focus will the Rise of the Tomb Raider. I look forward to having a few days off to fully focus my gaming time on Lara's latest.

What about you? What will you be playing with your vacation time?

SNL Joins Star Wars Episode VII's Main Cast For Fake Screen Tests

Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Daisy Ridley and John Boyega appeared on SNL recently, alongside a handful of celebrity guests and impersonators, to show off what the casting process of Episode VII was surely like.

To call out exactly who appears would spoil some jokes, but look out for someone who probably would have been a great Han Solo if Harrison Ford had backed out, and a great option for BB-8, had the technology not worked.

Nintendo Toyed With Bunny Protagonists For Splatoon

A new episode of Did You Know Gaming looks at the development history of Splatoon, showcasing some design directions Nintendo ultimately decided not to follow.
