Valve Provides More Information On Steam’s ‘Troubled Christmas’ That Affected 34,000

On Christmas, many Steam users found themselves looking at account information that wasn’t their own. That day, Valve provided a brief statement indicating that the problem was due to a caching error. Today, the company detailed exactly what happened.

In a statement, Valve indicates that the caching problem began with a denial of service attack that spiked traffic by 2,000 percent. The attack triggered a protocol with the company that handles Steam’s caching, as attacks on the store are frequent occurrences.

In this case, a second attack triggered another caching protocol that resulted in users seeing pages in the wrong language or, as we reported, viewing account information belonging to others. Valve says that approximately 34,000 individual accounts were affected.

[Update] Firefall Studio Red5 Finally Pays Employees After Missing Christmas Payroll

Update 2: Multiple current employees at Red5 indicate that the company did disburse payment as promised today. We are still awaiting an official comment from the studio, but did manage to reach someone there.

Yesterday, website MMORPG.com accused Red5 of spying on employees via a closed Facebook group frequented by current and former staff members. We reached out to Steven Na, marketing and business development manager, who was allegedly responsible. Na flatly denied MMORPG.com's report that he or anyone at the company had been collecting information about those discussing the matter via Facebook.

MMORPG.com has since retracted its statement.

The Creators Of XCOM's The Long War Mod Are Making A New Game

about X hours ago from

The Long War is easily the most famous modification for XCOM: Enemy Unknown and might be one of the most popular modifications ever made. The creators of that mod have founded their own studio, Long War Studios, and are working on something new.

The game they're making, Terra Invicta, sounds a good bit more cerebral than the tactical firefight fare of XCOM though they share the same basic concept:

"An alien force has arrived in the far reaches of Solar System and begun probing Earth's defenses and building an invasion fleet. The player must assemble a council of scientists, politicians, military leaders and operatives who can unite Earth's squabbling nations with the ultimate goal of taking the fight to the aliens in the high ground of outer space."

A New Mod For The Witcher III Lets You Play As Triss and Yennefer

The Witcher 3 has a lot of great characters and one of the biggest bummers (if you can call it that) about the game is you can't play as any of them for the whole game. Well, if you've got the PC version, you might be in luck. A new mod for the game allows you to replace Geralt with Triss, Ciri, Yennefer, or Shani.

The mod only switches out the models, not the voices and animations, so whoever you choose to play as will still sound like Geralt during cutscenes.

You can download the mod and read the instructions on how to install it here.
