Ubisoft Courts Canadian Government, Investors To Defend Against Vivendi Takeover

Ubisoft is making moves to protect itself from Vivendi’s overtures at a hostile takeover. The company is reported to be courting Canadian investors and government funding to defend its independence.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed to The Globe & Mail that the company is meeting with nearly a dozen potential investors. The news comes alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s visit to Ubisoft Montreal, and the publisher's courting of both provincial and national financial support.

The Assassin’s Creed publisher employs more than 3,000 across Canada in Montreal, Toronto, and other locations. Ubisoft is no doubt looking to leverage the visibility Trudeau’s visit brought as it seeks to shield itself from Vivendi, which has acquired a 15 percent control of Ubisoft since October.

Star Wars Battlefront Art Teases Two New Characters

Star Wars Battlefront Art Teases Two New Characters

DICE and Electronic Arts are teasing Star Wars Battlefront's forthcoming Outer Rim DLC with a piece of concept art that shows Nien Nunb leading the Rebel Alliance into battle against an Imperial army that appears to be joined by Greedo. While it makes sense that a bounty hunter of Greedo's stature would mingle at Jabba's Palace, it is odd to see these two characters front and center.

Rodian and Sullustan races are a part of the character creation options, but the particular outfits shown here are not. These are the outfits we saw Greedo wearing in the Cantina, and Nien Nunb sporting within the Battle of Endor. The Rodian character option is also only available for the Rebel Alliance. Could they be new playable heroes? Perhaps, but Nien Nunb getting the spotlight before Chewbacca, Yoda, Obi-Wan, or Lando seems a bit odd. There's a chance these characters could be NPCs much like the jawas or ewoks on their respective maps. Regardless of what role they play, they are front and center in an art piece EA is using to promote new content for Battlefront.

The image also hints that the Jabba's Palace map may feature a sizable exterior area, perhaps allowing for Walker Assault match types. EA's previous information of "battle within Jabba the Hutt's palace on Tatooine," made the map sound like it was of the smaller variety.

EA Adds Torchlight II To Origin Access Vault

You might recall that EA launched a PC counterpart to its Xbox One Access service. The premise is the same: for a monthly subscription fee, you get early play time with EA games and unfettered access to a selection of games.

The latest in the “Vault” is Torchlight II. Whereas Runic’s first action-RPG lootfest is a single-player affair, the sequel adds multiplayer and four new classes.

EA Access subscriptions cost $4.99 per month. Included in the Vault are the following:

DeNA’s Transformers: Battle Tactics Shutting Down In May

DeNA’s Transformers: Battle Tactics Shutting Down In May

After little more than a year since launch, DeNA’s Transformers: Battle Tactics has started to shut down. The title will officially cease operation in May.

The mobile strategy game allowed players to field a team of iconic Autobots and Decepticons to play against the AI or other players. Using a variety of skills and transforming at the right time meant the difference between victory and the scrap heap.

For those still playing, you’ve got until May 12 to play. No further updates will be rolled out between now and then. On March 10, you’ll no longer be able to purchase in-game currency, Battle Tactics will be removed from the app store, and the forums will be disabled. On March 11, the grand finale event will begin and run for two months.

Mafia III Director Envisioned Star Wars: Episode VII Game Starring Luke’s Son

Mafia III Director Envisioned Star Wars: Episode VII Game Starring Luke’s Son

Before the expanded universe was wiped out of existence. Even before Disney acquired all things Lucas, there was a game idea for what Star Wars seventh episode might be.

A one-sheet, which is a basic concept, some art, and a logo, was created by Mafia III creative director Haden Blackman while he was at LucasArts. The 2004 idea for Shadows of the Sith would have starred Luke Skywalker’s son, Ben.

The character would have been torn between the light and dark sides of the Force (sound familiar, The Force Awakens fans?). He also would have been pitted against a Solo, which may also resonate, though no one really knows yet.
