Diablo Design Doc Shows The Action-RPG In Its Primal Form

Diablo Design Doc Shows The Action-RPG In Its Primal Form

Last week, long-time game designer David Brevik gave a post-mortem on Diablo, a game that went from his original design to one of Blizzard's biggest franchises. If you missed his talk, never fear; he's posted the original design document on his site. While you don't get any of his additional commentary, it's a great, early look at the game.

It's a fascinating way to see how much of the game evolved, and also demonstrates just how much of it was there from the beginning. The original cast may have been whittled down from five or six races and three classes to the final three classes, but its strong Gothic setting was already a big part of the vision. There are also examples of the game's turn-based beginnings, which were thankfully scrapped in favor of the real-time action the series is known for. Curiously, some elements of the game's loot system was planned to be distributed via expansion discs. As proposed, they would have cost $4.95 and included a variety of rare, uncommon, and common items; monsters; hallway types; and other gameplay elements.

Reader Discussion: What Was The Most Exciting News Out Of GDC This Year?

Last week's GDC came with its fair share of announcements, from virtual reality's upcoming games to The Witcher 3 taking the top prize at the Game Developers Choice Awards.

What wowed you the most? Was it the announcement of PlayStation VR's price, or perhaps CastAR augmented reality, which aims to repopularize couch co-op? What did you find was the lowest point of the show? Were you taken aback by Microsoft's party scandal?

I think what stayed with me the most was the PlayStation VR announcement, considering it was the last of the three major headsets to finally announce its price. Considering the price is much lower than the other two, it's definitely on my radar. I also enjoyed the short animation dedicated to Satoru Iwata, which captured his legacy and love of the industry well.

The video may be long (about 20 minutes), but it's well worth your time. It begins with a large-scale battle, and later brings in Darth Vader, who slices his enemies into pieces. It's a fantastic recreation filled with a lot of action, and it ends with a classic lightsaber duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.

about X hours ago from

Did You Know Gaming's newest segment goes deep into Factor 5's attempt to bring an open-world Superman game to life in 2007.

The game went on to be cancelled, but Did You Know Gaming unearthed some footage of the title. Factor 5 wished to incorporate influences from Superman comics and movies into the game, including an appearance from Supergirl, but these ideas never came to fruition. The video encompasses the team's concepts and visions from early in development, such as creating a destructible cityscape environment for wrecking havoc while taking out foes.
