'I’m Not A Big Fan Of Xbox One And A Half,' Says Xbox Boss Phil Spencer

about X hours ago from

During Microsoft's Build 2016 Developer Conference, Xbox boss Phil Spencer held a small roundtable to discuss the changes coming to Xbox One and Windows gaming. During that chat, the rumors of PlayStation 4.5 and a possible Xbox counterpart came up. Spencer offered his own thoughts on the gossip and how it could apply to Xbox One and re-emphasizing earlier sentiments about the possibility of upgrading your Xbox One.

"I’m not a big fan of Xbox One and a half. If we’re going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers," Spencer said. "I don’t know anything about any of the rumors that are out there, but I can understand other teams’ motivations to do that. For us, our box is doing well. It performs, it’s reliable, the servers are doing well. If we’re going to go forward with anything, like I said, I want it to be a really substantial change for people – an upgrade."

The speculation surrounding PlayStation 4.5 are in relation to its upcoming VR push and the possible need for more power that some believe could result in 4K gaming (we're not so sure). Microsoft has no current plans to support VR on Xbox One, but we did speak with Xbox's head of advanced technology group, Jason Ronald, about the possibility of VR or HoloLens support. You can read that story here.

The International Dota 2 Championship Returns In August

Valve's annual Dota 2 tournament The International will return to Seattle's KeyArena this year, August 8-13. The tournament has commanded the largest prize pools for a single event in eSports history year-after-year, fueled by community-powered compendium systems found within the game of Dota 2 itself, allowing players to contribute to the massive prize pool by picking up cosmetics and other (non-gameplay) perks. Attendees will be eligible for special loot drops that will only be given out to audience members.

Players can watch the games streamed live, and can even use the Dota 2 client to view the games while having complete control over selected casters and where they want to focus on the map. Last year's prize pool was over $18 million.

Last year's event featured 16 teams, with Evil Geniuses coming away with the win and a prize purse of over $6.6 million. While we don't have exact figures for last year's tournament, the 2014 International pulled in over 20 million viewers, with over 2 million concurrent viewers.

Sony Computer Entertainment Is Now Sony Interactive Entertainment

Today marks the start of Sony's 2017 fiscal year. It also is a new chapter for the PlayStation team, with the rebranding and reorganization of Sony Computer Entertainment.

As we covered in January, the new Sony Interactive Entertainment will be led by president and CEO Andrew House. Sony Computer Entertainment America head Shawn Layden is now the chair of the publisher's worldwide studios as well as leading Sony Interactive Entertainment America, and head or worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida reports to him.

The move unifies PlayStation's gaming, streaming and network services, and PlayStation Vue television service under one roof. That roof happens to be in San Mateo, California, bringing headquarters for global operations to the United States.

Freestyle Games Suffers Layoffs As Part Of Previously Announced Activision Realignment

In February, we reported on layoffs at Activision studios in different locations. At the time, one such studio affected was Guitar Hero Live developer Freestyle Games in the UK.

Because of a mandatory "consultation" period that is part of UK labor laws, it's only now we're seeing layoffs at the studio. Activision confirmed to us today that a number of employees have been let go as part of the publisher's reorganization following a dip in casual game performance.

Activision and FreeStyleGames leadership have been considering a range of future options for the studio, and have been consulting with staff to explore all alternatives. The collective team have now reached the end of a consultation exercise and the decision has been made to restructure FreeStyleGames to better align the studio resources with future business needs. We are working with the studio teams to explore options to rebalance staff within Activision Blizzard and its related organisations.

Mega Man Legends 2 Lands On PSN Next Week

We may never get another Mega Man Legends game, but you'll finally be able to relive both of the originals. Mega Man Legends 2 is landing on PlayStation Network next week.

The announcement was made on the PlayStation Blogcast, which was released yesterday. Because it's a PlayStation 1 classic, it will likely be playable on PlayStation 3 and Vita.

Originally released in 2000 for the PlayStation, Mega Man Legends 2 is a departure from the core franchise. It takes cues from action-adventure games like The Legend of Zelda's 3D entries and other similar titles.
