GameStop Announces Publishing Deals With Three More Developers

about X hours ago from

Earlier this year, GameStop (Disclosure: GameStop is Game Informer’s parent company) and Insomniac announced a partnership to publish Song of the Deep. Today the retailer revealed deals with three more studios as part of its GameTrust initiative.

GameStop will be publishing games from Tequila Works (Deadlight, Rime), Ready at Dawn (The Order: 1886), and Frozenbyte (Trine). No specific titles have been announced, however two of these developers have projects in progress of which we are aware.

Frozenbyte just announced that its PC stealth-action game Shodden is also coming to PlayStation 4. Tequila Works has long been working on Rime, and recently reacquired the rights from Sony. Whether these are the titles GameStop is involved in is as yet unclear.

Better Ways To Show Your Dark Souls Love Than Prima's Disappointing Estus Flask

Better Ways To Show Your Dark Souls Love Than Prima's Disappointing Estus Flask

With the arrival of Dark Souls III last week, Prima released an Estus Flask special edition game guide, which alongside other merchandise, included a replica of an Estus Flask. Unfortunately, many unboxing videos and reviews have shown that fans are dissatisfied with the cheap-looking flask. With this in mind, we've compiled some better Estus Flask-themed merchandise so you can show off your love for Dark Souls.

The flask, an item from Dark Souls that replenishes a player's life, was described as a "high-quality, resin replica of the emerald Estus Flask" on Prima's official website. The Estus Flask edition guide launched at a price of $129.99, and is is listed at $77.99 on Amazon. It's a hefty price, and many felt underwhelmed with the product. Game critic Jim Sterling wrote in his unboxing review that, "The hollow lump is made from cheap green plastic that doesn’t even come close to the shade featured in promotional photography. Upon closer inspection, I’m fairly certain the official image doesn’t even display a physical flask – it looks like they’ve substituted an artist’s rendition rather than the real product."

You can view an image of the Prima "flask" that came with the special edition pack below:

Reader Discussion: Which Video Game Storylines Had A Lasting Impression On You?

Video game storytelling can be told in several different ways, but they're best done when they use the medium's interactivity to their advantage.

Telltale Games, among others, have popularized branching narratives, giving the impression of player control through choice mechanics. Shadow of the Colossus used ambiguous storytelling to weave together a series of events in an artistic way. Video game stories have impacted me more so than any book or movie ever has. Some of my favorite storylines come from games such as Mass Effect 2, Grim Fandango, and last year's The Witcher 3. It's too difficult to choose just one.

What are some of your favorite video game stories? Is there a certain plot or premise that sticks out to you more than another? Let us know in the comments!

Doom's Enormous BFG 9000 Recreated In Lego Weighs 20 Pounds

YouTuber ZaziNombies, famous for both his video game weapon Lego recreations and his clever name, is at it again. This time, he's remade the beast of a gun, Doom's BFG 9000, with over 5,000 Lego bricks.

The BFG 9000 is one of Doom's most powerful weapons, and fires green balls of plasma. ZaziNombie's Lego version weighs a whooping 20 pounds, and measures more than three feet long. It's so massive that the creator comments it could probably fit "hundreds, if not thousands, of [Lego] mini figures inside the frame of this weapon."

Ambitious Mod That Expands The Cities Of Skyrim Took Three Years To Complete

Skyrim released five years ago, but the mod community is still going strong. One of the newest mods, Holds: The City Overhaul, adds a plethora of new updates focusing particularly on architecture and expanding many of the cities' histories, books, character backgrounds, and outfits, along with entirely new settlements.

Areas such as Falkreath, Winterhold, and Dawnstar have all been rebuilt with new designs, and two new settlements, Amber Guard and Black Moor, have been added in. Mod creator Galandil explains in his post on Nexus Mods that the ambitious project took him over three years to finish. He hopes to make each place feel more "realistic and natural." He wrote, "The aim of all of this is to create a more memorable and diverse experience, making the cities actually feel like cities hopefully without ruining the natural and realistic design of the vanilla game."

The new books added to the game were written by creator Galandil and fellow modder Alfredasl, and these texts can be found in book stores in surrounding areas such as Falkreath, Solitude, and Windhelm.

Halo 5 Warzone Firefight Beta Extends By One Day

The beta for Halo 5: Guardians' upcoming new mode, Warzone Firefight, released in beta form this past week on April 14, and planned to end on April 18. 343 Industries has since announced that the beta is being extended by one day, wrapping up on Tuesday, April 19, at 10 a.m. PT.

The team announced the extension and thanked players for their patience in a forum post on the official Halo forum. The extension seems to be a result of technical issues the beta faced.

Warzone firefight, an upcoming game mode for Halo 5, is a take on the popular Firefight mode that debuted in Halo 3: ODST. Warzone Firefight sees up to eight players cooperatively play in a five round match against waves of enemies, and is planned for a summer launch.

Modder Recreates GoldenEye 007 Level In Doom

Modder demo_the_doomer has taken on the task of recreating Nintendo 64's 1997 classic GoldenEye 007 in Doom.

The mod reimagines GoldenEye's dam level, and is an updated version of a previous Doom mod, Goldeneye007tc. This time around, the modder is adding in some changes to the source material and original architecture, such as "the changing of the setting to a nighttime environment, and the changing of the guard towers and adding structures that utilize 3d floors, as well as chairs that explode." Alongside these additions, he plans to include comic-style cutscenes and more Bond one-liners.

A short video preview of the mod can be viewed below, which shows the modder blasting through the recreated level.

The web-based multiplayer title planned to connect PlayStation, Wii, and Xbox players by linking into games from both the Guitar Hero and DJ Hero franchises. The MMO aimed to release with an accompanying Facebook game, but both were cancelled by Activision in 2011.
