EA Ships 14 Million Copies Of Battlefront In Strong Close To Fiscal Year

EA is celebrating a strong close to its 2016 fiscal year, with record non-GAAP revenue. Part of that was another big jump, this time 26 percent, in Ultimate Team revenue.

The publisher pointed out two items related to Star Wars Battlefront. The first is that it surpassed expectations, shipping 14 million to retail against a target of 13 million. Second, the company credits the game with expanding its footprint among players. More than 15 percent of Battlefront players were new to the “EA ecosystem,” which we believe means did not previously have an Origin account.

EA closed the year with $4.396 billion in revenue, 55 percent of which was attributable to digital full-game and add-on purchases. The publisher expects that to climb to $4.750 billion in the current fiscal year. Net income jumped by 32 percent to $1.018 billion.

Konami has closed out its fiscal year, and the company has some good news for investors. If you’re hoping to hear about new Contra, Metal Gear, or Castlevania though, we don’t have anything significant to report.

You can expect a new Pro Evolution Soccer this year. And if you play Yu-Gi-Oh (with physical cards), those aren’t going anywhere.

However, most of Konami’s focus in its financial earnings report is on gambling, health, and mobile. Fitness revenue dipped by 2.8 percent. Pachislot and pachinko revenue fell by 17.8 percent. The gambling division climbed by 1.4 percent.

When Microsoft decided to move its backward compatible release cadence from a monthly drop to an “as available” schedule, we weren’t quite sure whether that was good news or bad. It turns out that new games have been available multiple times per week.

Today brings four more games to the program. We’re still hoping for multi-disc games, which would open up a number of late 360-era games. For now, it’s Xbox Live Arcade games and single-disc releases.

Joining the service are Final Fight: Double Impact, Faery: Legends of Avalon, Frogger 2, and Puzzlegeddon. Microsoft will have a hard time topping last week’s ten releases, but we kinda hope they try.

Mass Effect Andromeda Moves To 2017, Update Coming At E3

This is not my favorite news on the Citadel. Mass Effect Andromeda has been moved to 2017.

The move was rumored, but it's now official. The good news is that we’ll be getting some more information in about five weeks. Mass Effect Andromeda will be at E3 as part of the EA Play event.

“As we’ve been playing the game at the studio recently, it’s showing us that we’re taking the game in the right direction,” writes BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn. “But we also know we need the right amount of time to make sure we deliver everything the game can be and should be – that’s our commitment from all of us to all of you. Because of that, Mass Effect: Andromeda will now ship in early 2017. We can’t wait to show you how far we’re all going to go. We’ll see you at the EA PLAY press conference on June 12, with an update.”

Next Need For Speed Coming In 2017

The last Need for Speed didn't exactly set review-score records when it released in 2015. Ventura Bay was largely forgettable, and the overall experience didn't push the franchise ahead, as senior editor Matt Kato wrote in his review. Developer Ghost Games has added to the game since its launch, but don't expect to see a new entry this year. The studio says in a blog post that the next Need for Speed is coming in 2017, while also sharing a slew of gameplay stats.

Microsoft Universal Windows Platform Finally Lets You Unlock Frame Rate

If you have a video card and monitor that support either AMD FreeSync or Nvidia G-Sync, you may have noticed you can’t take full advantage of the tech in Windows 10's Universal Windows Platform games. That changes today.

FreeSync and G-Sync technologies link up the monitor refresh rate to the frame rate to reduce or entirely eliminate screen tearing, stutter, and input lag. You’ll be able to take advantage of that starting today as support rolls out.

Additionally, you’ll be able to fully unlock the frame rate in UWP games. Unfortunately, though the underlying technology is being pushed through, developers will still need to test and implement it in their own games.
