2K Games Enrolls Civilization In High School

Firaxis is partnering with a nonprofit learning company called GlassLab Inc. to adapt its popular Civilization strategy series into a learning tool for schools.

Earlier today, during the 13th Annual Games for Change Festival, Take-Two Interactive revealed that it is bringing a modified version of Civilization V – called CivilizationEDU – to high schools in North America in the fall of 2017. The company hopes the game will encourage students to think critically about historical events as they evaluate the ramifications of their economic and technological decisions. At the same time GlassLab Inc. will use learning analytics to assess students’ problem-solving skills.

“We are incredibly proud to lend one of our industry’s most beloved series to educators to use as a resource to inspire and engage students further,” says Chairman and CEO of Take-Two Strauss Zelnick. “Civilization has challenged millions of people around the world to revisit and experience history, pursue boldly exploration, and create their own societies based on their passions and freedom of choice. I can’t think of a better interactive experience to help challenge and shape the minds of tomorrow’s leaders.”

Bungie Updates On Destiny Crucible Delays And Balance Changes

Destiny has faced some technical challenges in recent days, as both Trials of Osiris and the monthly Iron Banner tournament were removed from rotation to address matchmaking issues. A new hotfix has recently deployed, which hopefully resolves the issue. Bungie addressed the topic in a recent post on the official site.

Barring any newly emergent problems, Bungie is tentatively proclaiming that Trials of Osiris will be back for this weekend, and that Lord Saladin may return next week to host the Iron Banner tournament. “This is no time to create a gulf between you and the sole surviving Iron Lord,” writes David “Deej” Dague in the update, no doubt referring to Saladin’s impending starring role in Rise of Iron

Extensive Collection Of The Oregon Trail Materials Donated To The Strong Museum

Former employees of The Oregon Trail production team from Minnesota Educational Computing Corporation (MECC), including the game's co-creator Don Rawitsch, have donated a collection of materials dictating the history of the company from 1973 to 1996 to The Strong Museum in New York.

The donated collection includes hundreds of pieces of internal documents, software, and press clippings. The Oregon Trail was inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame earlier this year in The Strong Museum in recognition for it being the most influential educational game of all time. MECC is well known for helping integrate educational games into the grade school curricula, having created over 300 titles that were then used in schools nationwide.

Earlier this week, The Strong Museum also received the desk from the Florida home of video game pioneer Ralph Baer. You can check out that story here.
