Nintendo Stock Price Surges After Super Mario Run Announcement

about X hours ago from

Today Nintendo announced Super Mario Run, the company's first Mario-centric game for Apple's iOS platform. In light of the news, the company's stock price has surged.

Nintendo's stock is up almost 29% (up to $36) today as of this writing following Super Mario Run's reveal, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Earlier this year, Nintendo's stock skyrocketed following the release of Pokémon Go, then quickly dove as investors realized the company had little stake in the title. Today's surge will likely be more reliable, however, as Super Mario Run is actually being published by Nintendo as part of their agreement with DeNA. This is the company's second iOS release following Miitomo, which released back in March.

4K Blu-Rays Will Not Work On The PlayStation 4 Pro

Although the newly-announced PlayStation 4 Pro will run games and videos at a 4K resolution, it will not work with 4K Ultra Blu-Ray movies.

At today's PlayStation Meeting conference, a Sony representative confirmed with Game Informer the console will not be compatible with Ultra Blu-Rays movie discs. 4K movies will still be available on the console via apps and streaming services. Not running these discs is an interesting move for Sony, especially considering Mircosoft's currently available Xbox One S can run them.

The PlayStation 4 Pro is set to launch on November 10 for $399. You can read more details about the system here.

Every PS4 Will Be HDR Compatible Via Next Week's Firmware Update

One of Sony's big talking points for the PS4 Pro is its support for High Dynamic Range content, but players won't have to wait until November 10 to see what HDR is all about. Sony's Andrew House announced that a firmware update due out next week will make all PS4s HDR compatible.

House talked quite a bit about how HDR enhances the visuals of games by offering a wider range of colors on HDR-compatible displays. HDR-compatible games shown during the event included Days Gone, Uncharted 4, and Infamous: First Light, the last two of which will have HDR support patched in to the existing games. The PS4 will get this ability starting next week via a firmware update, though there's no word on when compatible games will be individually patched to take advantage of the feature.

First Gameplay Of Mass Effect Andromeda On PlayStation 4 Pro Revealed

During this year's PlayStation Meeting, Electronic Arts showed off the first gameplay footage of Mass Effect Andromeda, running on the recently-announced PlayStation 4 Pro.

The footage showed off protagonist Ryder and two of their companions wandering inside a cave on a new planet in the Helios Cluster, in a third-person view which is farther behind the character than in previous Mass Effect games. Ryder and their two companions used jetpacks and scanners to make their way through the cave, which was filled with bright foliage and large gaps.

After a short in-game scene, the footage transitions to cutscenes which showed off the new level of detail of the PlayStation 4 Pro. You can watch the footage below.

Apple Introduces iPhone 7 And 7 Plus With Overhauled Headphone System And More

For gamers, perhaps the biggest surprise coming out of Apple's live event was Shigeru Miyamoto taking the stage to announce Super Mario Run. However, the broader audience was more interested in the reveal of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. While rumors and leaks have been circulating for months, this reveal is the first official word from Apple.

The biggest rumor making the rounds has been that the iPhone 7 series does away with the mainstay 3.5mm headphone jack that has been around since the very first model. That rumor turned out to be true, as headphones now must be connected through Bluetooth or the Lightning port that is typically used for charging or auxiliary cables in vehicles. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus include a pair of earbuds that plug into the Lightning port. Apple also announced the ultra-portable AirPods, a new set of first-party wireless earbuds with features such as sensors that know when you place the headphones in your ears and when you start talking.

If you want to use your old headphone that connects via the 3.5mm headphone jack, an adapter is included with each phone. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are getting stereo speakers for the first time (one on the bottom and one on the top) that put out twice the volume of the speaker found on iPhone 6S and 6S Plus.
