Romero, Bleszinski, And More Look Back At The Golden Age Of PC Platformers

about X hours ago from

In support of its indie partner Kickstarter campaign for Rad Rogers, an Apogee-style 2D platformer, 3D Realms has released a mini-documentary looking back at the peak of the side-scrolling platformer genre. The mini-doc features such developers as John Romero, Cliff Bleszinski, Tom Hall, Bill McIntosh, and Scott Miller.

While Mario might be the first name that pops in your head when you think of 2D platformers, the genre extends way beyond Nintendo's mascot. This mini-doc brings up the impact Mario had on the genre, but it focuses on the PC side of things with games like Commander Keen, Jazz Jackrabbit, and Abuse.

You can check out the mini-doc below.

Using more than 16,000 dominoes and an immense amount of skill, YouTuber TheDominoKing has dedicated his newest project to Shovel Knight.

It took two days of hard work, which seems like a small amount of time to build something like this. In the YouTube video description, TheDominnoKing writes that he's "very proud of this setup" and that he's surprised he had enough shades of blue. You can watch the video for yourself below, which notably has an awesome rock rendition of tunes from Shovel Knight playing in the background.

Soma Turns A Profit After Selling Nearly Half A Million Copies

Six months ago, Frictional Games detailed that its psychological thriller Soma was nearing profitability, and that it had sold 250,000 copies. Now, a year since its launch, the developer has come forward to say that the horror title has finally turned a profit as it nears half a million copies sold.

In a recent blog post, Frictional Games explains that Soma was expensive for the team to make, and its concept was originally a hard sell. Differentiating it from Amnesia: Dark Descent, the developer's previous game, was a challenging and risky feat. "While we had the luxury of having already made a successful horror game, Soma was not an easy sell," says Frictional. "The game relies heavily on getting certain themes across to the player, and communicating this proved to be a hard task indeed."

Frictional Games also stresses that Soma was by far the team's most ambitious project to date, as well as the most costly. Soma took five years to make, and much of the developer's finances were spent towards outsourcing for voice acting, animations, and more. "Taken together with salaries and all other kinds of expenses, Soma cost quite a bit to make - well over 10 times what Amnesia: The Dark Descent cost us," says Frictional.

The Elder Scrolls: Legends is currently in an open beta on PC, giving players a chance to check out the collectible card game in advance of its release later this year. In the meantime, players can spend cash on the free-to-play game, including on a newly released starter pack that seems like a decent deal for those who are willing to pay.

For $4.99, players can buy the starter pack. It includes 10 packs of cards, which are usually priced at $2.99 for a pair of packs or $7.99 for seven packs. The bundle contains one guaranteed legendary card, as well as the exclusive in-game player title The Founder and a trio of exclusive alternative-art cards. Before you get too many crazy ideas, starter packs are limited to one per account.

The Elder Scrolls: Legends is set for a release on PC, Mac, and iOS and Android tablets this year, with iOS and Android phone versions in development as well. For more information on the game, take a look at Dan Tack's hands-on impressions.

Indie developer Campo Santo is working with production company Good Universe to develop projects in games and film. The first of those projects is a film adaptation of the developer's debut release, Firewatch.

In Firewatch, two lonely characters get to know one another via radio while working as fire lookouts in the Wyoming wilderness. Their relationship deepens while they investigate a variety of break-ins and other mysterious events during the summer. Good Universe is perhaps best known for producing the pair of Neighbors comedies, created by Seth Rogan, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver.
