Sports Games Dominate September 2016 NPD Report

The recent NPD report offers a mixed picture of the video game industry in September 2016, but it’s notable that sports games continue to dominate the early fall. NBA 2K17, Madden NFL 17, FIFA 17, and NHL 17 took home the top-selling spots. Both NBA 2K17 and FIFA 17 included detailed story-driven modes, which might have been attractive to many users. Even so, those top-selling sports titles couldn’t carry the industry to higher software, hardware, and accessories compared to last year; overall sales were down by 23 percent in September.

The Xbox One continued a streak as the best-selling hardware in September, accounting for 37 percent of the overall hardware sales. “This was not enough to counter a revenue decline in total hardware,” says NPD analyst Sam Naji. “Due to average retail price declines for consoles and a decrease in hardware units sold for the PS4 and the Wii U, total hardware dollar spending declined by 25 percent since September 2015." At the same time, the PS4 Slim launched in September, and was the third best-selling hardware SKU. Nintendo had some good hardware news, as the 3DS continued a four-month trend of increased hardware sales, possibly in thanks to the resurgent popularity of the Pokémon brand.

Nostalgic Fan Makes Endearing Commercial For Pokémon

The Pokémon series is continuing a landmark 20-year anniversary. Pokémon Go become a global phenomenon, events have been held throughout the year, and the start of the next generation of the franchise is less than a month away. It's a great time to be a fan of the little pocket monsters, with one going so far as to make this professional-looking advertisement.

John Wikstrom's video starts with a childhood memory of collecting every Pokémon thing possible, then jumps forward to an adult trying to find that magic again. The video is heartfelt, and probably how many people will feel about the series when they get their hands on Sun and Moon.

Voice Actors Strike After Negotiations Fail With Game Publishers

Voice Actors Strike After Negotiations Fail With Game Publishers

Days after a final set of negotiations failed, the SAG-AFTRA union has officially called for a voice-actor strike against gaming companies including Activision, Electronic Arts, and Take-Two. The decision will affect games that went into production after February 17, 2015.

As we explained in our report earlier this week, points of contention included working environments, the ability for companies to hire non-union actors, and bonus structures. The two parties met earlier in the week in one last effort to settle contract terms, but the discussions didn't resolve the core issues.

“Through many months of bargaining with interactive employers, we have not reached a fair agreement covering SAG-AFTRA performers working in video games – often the most popular games in the world. Our members have been clear, now is the time for employers to negotiate a modern contract that covers this highly profitable industry,” said SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris in a statement released to Deadline on Sunday night. “A strike is not to be entered into lightly, but when the employers leave us with no recourse, we must stand firm for our members. It is imperative that we secure for them the protections, compensation and benefits they deserve.”

They can be purchased together or separately but you'll get a free statue of fighting game legend Daigo Umehara if you choose to get both.

Sadly, these statues won't be getting Halloween costumes like some of the fighters in Street Fighter V.

about X hours ago from

If you were waiting for the Japan-exclusive PlayStation 1 game, The Silver Case, to be released in English, then your wait is almost over. The game recently saw an HD remaster on PC, and is getting the same treatment for the PlayStation 4 in the form of a physical and digital release slated for early 2017.

This visual novel/adventure game hybrid puts you in the shoes of a member of the Special Forces Unit as you investigate a string of murders. While he was relatively unknown at the time, it was Suda51's first game that he made under Grasshopper Manufacture Inc. Suda51 is now known for his bizarre but divisive titles like Killer7, No More Heroes, Shadows of the Damned, Lollipop Chainsaw, and more.

Report: HTC Vive Has Sold More Than 140,000 Units

Report: HTC Vive Has Sold More Than 140,000 Units

Cher Wang, an HTC Vive representative, told Chinese VR website 87970 that a total of 140,000 Vive headsets have been sold to date. In August, the Vive was sitting around 100,000 total units sold.

This coincides with reports of a rise in HTC's revenue from August to September. Selling more VR units could easily be the catalyst for an increase in revenue.

Although, 140,000 units for Sony might not be as well received. The recently launched (and reviewed) PlayStation VR is estimated to sell 2.6 million units by the end of the year, which might seem a bit high. However the dramatically lower cost of entry and level console playing field might make this a more reachable number for PSVR.
