Reader Discussion – Do You Enjoy Metafictional Video Games?

about X hours ago from

I've always enjoyed thought-provoking games. SOMA endeared me with its themes of existentialism, and The Stanley Parable astonished me and made me laugh with its commentary on game design and choice. But I came to realize that I didn't just enjoy games that made me think, but I also admired titles that were able to distort reality and fiction, and be aware of their own fictionality.

Games like the aforementioned Stanley Parable, along with Pony Island, Eternal Darkness, The Beginner's Guide, and more really had an impact on me. Others I appreciated because of select moments, like the Psycho Mantis boss fight in Metal Gear Solid.

What are some of your favorite fourth wall breaks in video games? Do you find metafiction interesting when done well? Or are you not fond of this technique? If you want to read more on the subject, check out our list of top 10 fourth wall breaks in video games.

Shuhei Yoshida Announces That The Last Guardian Has Gone Gold

It's suffice to say that we have been waiting a long time for The Last Guardian. Now, Sony President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has unveiled on Twitter that the project has gone gold, meaning that its development has wrapped up.

I've waited a very long time to say this... The Last Guardian has gone gold! I'm so excited for you all to finally experience it ˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖

In development since 2007 and publicly announced at E3 in 2009, The Last Guardian has gone through rocky development and left fans wondering if the project was still ongoing or not. Executive producer Yoshifusa Hayama left the project in 2011, and Shadow of the Colossus and Ico creator Fumito Ueda parted ways with Sony, though he continued to work on the project.

Acrobatic 2D Shooter Seraph Hits PlayStation 4 In November

about X hours ago from

Dreadbit's Seraph, a shooter/platformer hybrid that released for PC on Steam earlier this year, is making its way to PlayStation 4 on November 1. You play as an angel called Seraph, who aims to recover her lost power and escape a demon-filled prison.

What's most interesting about the game is its twist on aiming. Seraph will automatically aim for you. She chooses who to target with her arsenal of firearms, and the player instead focuses on her moves and acrobats during combat.

See How The Dungeons In The Wind Waker Work In Latest Boss Keys Video

about X hours ago from

After delving into the ins and outs of the two Legend of Zelda Oracle games, Youtuber Mark Brown sets his sights on analyzing a much bigger game: The Wind Waker.

In the twelve-minute video, Brown points out a number of things about the intricacies of The Wind Waker's dungeons. He remarks on how rather than having the player take notes on areas they can't proceed through initially and return to them after obtaining that dungeon's items, the dungeons you explore in the submerged version of Hyrule guide you directly back to the most important obstacle your new item overcomes, similar to some of the shortcuts in games like Metroid or the Souls series. He also notes how many of the dungeons suffer from a linearity that makes them less fun to explore than those of previous games but feature more coherent motifs.

You can watch the full video and learn more about how the dungeons work in the video below.

New Lime Green 3DS XL Includes Pre-Installed Copy Of Super Mario World

about X hours ago from

Although the Nintendo Switch is getting all of the attention this week, the company's other portable, the 3DS, is still trucking along just fine. It's gotten plenty of great games this year, Pokémon Sun and Moon are on the way, and now, you can get it in a delightful lime green color.

The new color (which is black on the inside) is an Amazon exclusive and comes bundled with a digital copy of Super Mario World. It retails for $200 (same as all the other 3DS models) and does not include its own AC charger. Earlier this year, Nintendo also unveiled the Galaxy-themed New 3DS XL, though that did not come with a game of its own.

Our TakeI'm not ashamed to say I bought one of these. I'm proud! I don't have a 3DS, and this one comes with one of the greatest games of all time. Please don't judge me.

Esports Outfit Team Liquid Signs Pro Civilization VI Player

Most of us probably don't think of the Civilization series as a hyper-competitive game. In fact, we may think of it as the exact opposite: a calming, methodical game valuing decision-making over twitch reflex.

As it turns out, competitive Civilization has been around for a while, and as a marker of the game's success, eSports outfit Team Liquid has signed its first professional Civilization VI player, Stephen 'MrGameTheory' Takowsky. Takowsky has become a household name in high-level Civilization, earning the #1 spot on multiple Civilization V leaderboards.

On its announcement website, Team Liquid offers a brief primer on the world of high-level Civilization play, laying out what it takes to compete. "More than any other game, Civilization's turn-based format demands efficiency at all levels," the site says. "Unlike games that cap players based on their mechanics, Civilization taxes a person's decision making and ability to thrive under pressure." Team Liquid hopes to eventually sign a whole Civilization team, with Takowsky as its captain.

Latest Halloween Update For Team Fortress 2 Adds New Maps, Revives Old Ones

Almost ten years later, Valve is still adding new content and events to Team Fortress 2.

This year's "Scream Fortress VIII" Halloween event will see the introduction of three new community-build maps (Brimstone, Pit of Death, and Maple Ridge Event), two taunts, and a crate filled with twenty-one new cosmetic items. During the event, any "unusual" rarity items that drop from the crates will have a Halloween visual effect on them, and the chances for these unusual items to drop has doubled for the duration of the event.

The update also brings with it a number of returning features. All maps from previous Scream Fortress events are currently playable, and the contracts from the previous Scream Fortress return, along with some new one contracts.
