Reader Discussion: Who Is Your Favorite Video Game Pet?

It’s been a long time coming. It feels like The Last Guardian has been in development forever – we suspect some of the people reading this post weren’t alive when the game was first announced. But at long last, The Last Guardian is steering toward launch tomorrow, on December 6. You can read our full review in case you haven't made up your mind over the many years of waiting.

The game tells the emotional story of a boy and his connection to a strange creature, and the intimate focus on that pairing got us thinking about our favorite video game pets. Do you have fond memories of Mordecai’s Bloodwing in Borderlands? Maybe your adventures with Dogmeat in the Fallout series struck a chord? Did you form a bond with one of your pets in The Sims 3: Pets expansion? How about Riley the German Shepherd in Call of Duty: Ghosts?

Tell us about your favorite video game pets in the comments below.

MGS V Rain Dance Scene Recast With Hideo Kojima And Norman Reedus

Creative individuals have done amusing things thanks to mods on the PC version of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. That fact is on display in a new video from YouTuber Solidcal Modding, who has taken some liberties with the character models in one of the most unusual scenes.

In the original, Quiet plays in the rain with Snake, but in the modded version, we see Norman Reedus (and his model from PT) as the main frolicking party, who is later joined by Kojima, dressed to the nines.

Report: South Korean Government Cracks Down On Game Hacking

A report from PVPLive offers some hope for both game companies and game players frustrated by the proliferation of programs that hack a game with aimbots, scripts, and other programs that interfere with a game’s normal functionality. The rules come through an amendment to an existing law that aims to promote the game industry in South Korea.

The report indicates that those who break this new law could face 5 years of jail time or as much as $43,000 in fines. The new South Korean law comes amid the use of numerous cheating and hacking problems for games in South Korea, particularly notable in games like Overwatch

The legal repercussions for hackers may also have positive effects for other players around the world, particularly in places where Korean cheaters are using a VPN to play on servers in other countries.

Fan-Run Vanilla World Of Warcraft Server Elysium Coming Online Next Week

Preserving games can be a tricky thing, particularly when it comes to MMOs. Expansions and additional updates fundamentally change the way players engage with those virtual worlds. Fan servers attempt to give players a way to experience these games the way they once were, and old-school World of Warcraft fans will soon be able to revisit the game's vanilla version.

The Elysium Project is launching on December 17 at noon EST. It's the culmination of working with the team behind Nostalrius, which had earlier operated an unsanctioned WoW server. Blizzard shut it down, but the resulting online support inspired the company to invite Nostalrius' members to Blizzard's offices for a discussion.

Akuma's New Street Fighter V Look Betrays A Surprisingly Traditional Moveset

Akuma's New Street Fighter V Look Betrays A Surprisingly Traditional Moveset

For better and worse, Street Fighter V has established itself as a very different game. It changed some key aspects of the series, emphasized online play and competition over single-player modes, and left out a number of key characters fans have come to love. And the characters who did make it in tended to be very different to their older iterations. Revealed at this year's PlayStation Experience, Akuma might first look like he's following that trend, with his lion's mane and short front cut. But, as a character fans have been asking for, Capcom has kept the rage-filled character pretty faithful to his classic self. After playing a few rounds as him, this feels like the right move.

Extended Gameplay Trailer For Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite Reveals Morrigan, Captain America

Though we just our first look at Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite yesterday, Capcom and Marvel weren't quite done for the weekend. After the conclusion of the ESPN2 Capcom Cup Broadcast, we got a longer cut of the gameplay trailer we saw yesterday, including two new characters: Captain America and Morrigan Aensland.

The two new characters seem pretty faithful to their previous incarnations. Captain America has tried-and-true sheild throw move and Charging Star super, while Morrigan has her shadowy uppercut and Darkness Illusion super. You can watch the two show off their combo prowess below.

Cowboys Battle Dinosaurs In PlayStation VR's Dino Frontier

Cowboys Battle Dinosaurs In PlayStation VR's Dino Frontier

Dino Frontier is a tabletop-scale VR simulation that lets players build their own Wild West city in a world infested with dinosaurs. This strange idea comes from developer Uber Entertainment, the team behind Monday Night Combat, Planetary Annihilation, and the PlayStation VR launch title, Wayward Sky.

Uber had a playable version of Dino Frontier on hand at this year's PlayStation Experience in Anaheim, CA, and I had the chance to put the game through its paces, finding it to be remarkably simple, yet loaded with potential. After putting on the PlayStation VR headset, I was surprised to see the world has a pop-up book quality to it. It isn't that big, but it still manages to deliver a sense of considerable scale when you see just how small the settlement and characters are within it. The player lords over this terrain like a god, similar in a way to Peter Molyneux's Black & White and Populous titles.
