Report: Upcoming PlayStation 4 Update To Improve Performance Of Older Games On Pro Systems

Along with adding the option to use external hard drives, the PlayStation 4's 4.50 update (which is still in beta and offered only to a limited number of users) may also improve the performance of older games on the PlayStation 4 Pro.

The Verge reports the update includes a "Boost Mode" on PlayStation 4 Pro systems, which allows them to run "at a higher GPU and CPU clock speed" to improve performance for games released before the Pro was, allowing for reduced load times and higher framerates on some titles. The mode could cause glitches or errors in some games, however, which is why the mode can be turned on or off in the system menu. Currently, games released before the Pro run about the same on the system unless they're updated by the developers, and in some cases run worse. Though Boost Mode wouldn't give older games HDR options or allow for higher texture density, it should be a nice quality-of-life improvement.

We've reached out to Sony for comment and will update this article should they offer any details.

Watch UFC Fighter Angela Hill Pose As Street Fighter's Sagat During Weigh-In

Watch UFC Fighter Angela Hill Pose As Street Fighter's Sagat During Weigh-In

One of my favorite long-standing parts of Street Fighter are the intro animations. At their best (like in Street Fighter Alpha 3), they can give depth to characters that are otherwise caricatures.

So it's no surprise real-life fighters would take inspiration from them. During a weigh-in for a fight, UFC strawweight Angela Hill imitated Muay Thai fighter Sagat's idle animation while greeting her opponent, then switched to the character's cross-armed, laughing victory animation when it was time for photos. You can watch the entire routine below.

Aksys Reveals Zero Escape: The Nonary Games US Release Date

Zero Escape: The Nonary Games, a compilation of visual novel/adventure-puzzle games 999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, Nine Doors and Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, will be headed to PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC in the US on March 24.

Though the bundle does not include the last game in the trilogy (Zero Time Dilemma), it does include an HD version of 999 (originally released on the DS) with English and Japanese voice acting, as well as an "Adventure" and "Novel" modes, which will change the look of the game slightly. As Siliconera reports, several voice actors will be reprising their roles, there will be a new, in-game calculator to help with the game's math-related puzzles, but does not include the bonus ending from the iOS version of 999.

Celebrate The Launch Of Fire Emblem Heroes With Free Super Mario Run Coins

As Nintendo ramps up its mobile efforts, it's learning how to get players to hop among its multiple games on phones.

Case in point: the launch of Fire Emblem Heroes is cause for celebration in Super Mario Run, where players who log in now will receive 2,222 coins (coinciding with the game's launch date of February 2, or 2/2). You don't have to download Fire Emblem Heroes or have paid the $10 it takes to unlock all of Super Mario Run's courses, either – all of you have to do is log in.

Final Fantasy XV's Upcoming Magitek Exosuits Delayed Due To Power Rangers Similarity

Square Enix recently held an Active Time Report livestream for Final Fantasy XV, revealing its upcoming free DLC including the Magitek Exosuits must be delayed. The Magitek Exosuits, which give you invincibility and improve your fishing skills, were set to hit on February 21, but this free Booster Pack DLC has to be pushed back due to their resemblance to the Power Rangers' suits.

According to Kotaku's translation, marketing manager Akio Ofuji confirmed that Square was contacted by the owners of the Power Rangers IP about the similarities, making Square reevaluate the design. In the end, the team decided to redo it. Director Hajime Tabata also added that the designers didn't intend to mimic the franchise and didn't realize it came across that way until the costumes were shown off and people made the Power Rangers comparison.

Earlier this week, Square Enix unveiled the Magitek Exosuits with news of an upcoming Gladio DLC and improvements to Chapter 13 coming at the end of March.

Weekend Warrior – You've Got Your Big Game, I've Got Mine

Weekend Warrior – You've Got Your Big Game, I've Got Mine

The New England Patriots are taking on the Atlanta Falcons in Superbowl LI on Sunday, so sports fans have a lot to look forward to. Will Tom Brady go out on top? Or will Atlanta win in a shocking upset? Is this all just a meaningless distraction from the serious issues of today's troubled times? Go sports!

At the very least, the Super Bowl is a great excuse for shoving a ton of potato chips and buffalo wings down our throats. Plus, the premiere of 24: Legacy airs immediately after the game. Between the game, the show, and the commercials, there's a little something for everyone. Let's take a look at what some of Game Informer's editors and interns will be up to during this weekend, and feel free to share your own plans in the comments below!

Suriel Vasquez (@SurielVasquez) – I was able to complete my first Destiny raid this week, and I’m hoping I’ll be able to finish another this weekend. That said, I’m getting to the point (365 light) where It’s going to be harder to marathon the game, so I’ll have to stick to more daily/weekly activities for a bit. I’m also planning to play as much Resident Evil 7 as I can before Nioh comes out and I can finally play it for myself.

Mobile App Intelligence Firm Sensor Tower Reports Strong Numbers For Fire Emblem Heroes' Launch

Mobile App Intelligence Firm Sensor Tower Reports Strong Numbers For Fire Emblem Heroes' Launch

Fire Emblem is the latest series Nintendo is testing the mobile waters with. Although it's not as popular of a franchise as previous mobile endeavors such as Mario or Pokémon, it's still off to a strong start according to mobile marketing intelligence firm Sensor Tower.

Today, Sensor Tower reports that the free-to-play Fire Emblem Heroes has grossed $2.9 million worldwide in its first day and has been downloaded more than two million times from the App Store and Google Play. Sensor Tower says this tops Clash Royale's launch, which it reports made $1.4 million on its launch day, but had the same number of downloads. The firm also compares this to its launch day revenues for Pokémon Go at $10.2 million and Mario Run at $8.4 million (although keep in mind that Mario Run was behind a $10 paywall). For a niche series like Fire Emblem, this means it's off to a good start. The big challenge ahead will be if it can engage its player base for the long haul. Sensor Tower also notes that the majority of Fire Emblem Heroes downloads have come from Japan, which isn't that surprising considering the popularity of the series and mobile games there.

Stardew Valley Getting Physical, Collector's Edition In April

Stardew Valley was one of Game Informer's top 50 games in 2016, winning our best simulation game award. The farming simulator, reminiscent of the earlier Harvest Moon games, originally launched on PC and just recently made its way to console. However, up until this point, the game has only been available for digital download. That's about to change.

Today, Chucklefish, which helped developer ConcernedApe launch the game on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, announced that with the help of 505 Games, the game is getting its own physical copy you can pick up at retailers. This collector's edition contains the following bonuses:

The edition will be available starting April 11 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. You can watch the retail announcement below for more information.

Metroid-Style Forma.8 Launches This Month For PS4, Vita

Making a game can be a huge and sprawling – but ultimately rewarding – undertaking. This description applies not only to the creative process of MixedBag's newest title, but to Forma.8 itself. First announced in 2013, the metroidvania game about a stranded exploration probe on a strange world officially releases for PS4 (with native 4K for Pro owners) and PS Vita on February 23. It will be available on the Playstation Store as a digital download, though the studio plans to offer a limited amount of physical copies through Limited Run Games sometime in the future.

Much has changed since 2014, but you can see how far Forma.8 has come through Kyle Hilliard's preview here.
