Former Game Informer Editor Michael Futter Pens 'The GameDev Business Handbook'

Getting a game studio off the ground is no small feat. Outside of hiring developers and executing on the game design, studios must navigate the tricky back channels of publisher relationships and deal with unexpected budget roadblocks.

To help other fledgling developers get a leg up on this often confounding process, developer Mike Bithell (Thomas Was Alone, Volume: Coda) is publishing "The GameDev Business Handbook" written by former Game Informer news editor Michael Futter. To research this complex issue, Futter interviewed more than 25 developers, publishers, and industry professionals.

“I am incredibly proud to help bring Michael Futter’s work to game developers,” Bithell said in a press release. “One of the great privileges of running a slightly pretentiously self titled company, is having the power to make things you hoped had existed on your way up exist. I wish I’d had access to the insights and structure that this book lays out. I’m excited to see how the world reacts to what’s been created here."

Collect Star Wars Characters Through Augmented Reality On September 1

September 1 is Force Friday, a day dedicated to buying new Star Wars merchandise, most notably the first batch of toys based on Star Wars: The Last Jedi. As collectors hunt down Luke Skywalker action figures, don't be surprised if you see them posing awkwardly in front of posters. Lucasfilm has created a fun, little augmented-reality app that creates photo opportunities.

When a specific graphic with the "Find the Force" logo is scanned by the app, a character from The Last Jedi will appear in augmented reality. The graphics are scattered throughout different stores, each producing a different character from September 1-3. There are 15 characters in total to track down. If you want to share silly Star Wars photos online, this is your chance!

Ubisoft Reveals Anno 1800, Coming Winter 2018

At Gamescom, Ubisoft revealed that the Anno series is coming back. Anno 1800, the upcoming entry in the RTS city-building series, takes us into the past during the Industrial Revolution.

Details are slim, but we did see a short presentation and demo that showcased parts of the game. Anno 1800 will tackle issues such as the age of colonialism, a sparking revolution, and the rise of success from those without noble blood. You have the city at your fingertips, and when issues come up such as uprisings in the streets, it's up to you how to respond. For example, you can send in forces to control riots and violence.

NBA 2K18 Issuing Celtics Kyrie Cover

NBA 2K18 Issuing Celtics Kyrie Cover

NBA 2K18 cover star Kyrie Irving was just traded from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Boston Celtics, but 2K Games has already released the cover of the September game with Irving in his old Cavs uni. Now what?

Jason Argent, senior vice president of basketball operations for 2K, sent us this statement:

We are excited to be part of one of the most memorable NBA offseasons in history with Kyrie, our 2K18 cover athlete, and Isaiah, one of the stars of our 2K roster, trading places. This isn't an unprecedented event, a cover athlete being traded – but it's certainly interesting timing with 2K18 being released in less than a month. The good news is that as the most authentic and realistic basketball game on the market, we're used to being nimble and responding to changes in the NBA. Fans should be thrilled to know that we will issue a version of 2K18 featuring Kyrie in a Boston Celtics uniform at a later date.

Fire Emblem Warriors Trailer Shows Off New Fates Characters

The newest Fire Emblem Warriors trailer introduces Leo, Takumi, Hinoka, and Camilla to the ensemble cast that is made up primarily of the most recent Fire Emblem titles.

The Warriors mash-up, a genre best know for fighting dozens of enemies with sweeping attacks, has been highly requested by Fire Emblem fans for some time and was announced for the Switch and 3DS earlier this year. The trailer released for Gamescom shows curiously little gameplay, but the genre is a fairly known quantity.

Also curious is that both the European and Japanese versions of the trailer finish with release dates, while the US version does not. The video description does reiterate that the game is expected in Fall of this year.

Mei Gets Her Origin Told In New Overwatch Short

Blizzard has released a CG short telling the story of everyone's favorite ice-based scientist, Mei.

The short has Mei explaining that her research base needed to freeze themselves for an extended sleep to save on resources. Mei wakes up and there's shades of Wall-E while she attempts to figure out what step to take next.

Check out the short below. Mei joins the CG short film group alongside Tracer, Winston, and Bastion, among others. Hopefully Blizzard has plans to make shorts for every character in time.
