Ready For Some Football? Watch Game Informer Editors Stream Madden NFL 18

Tomorrow is the official release date for Madden NFL 18, when football fans on any platform can take their spot under center and quarterback their virtual teams to victory.

To celebrate the release of a game we found to be strong once again this year (read our review here), GI editors Matt Bertz and Brian Shea are taking a tour of the game's new features during a two-hour livestream. Destinations include a look at the new Longshot story mode, changes coming to Madden Ultimate Team (including a look at how the packs are different), and a head-to-head match to see which editor can earn bragging rights for best Madden player in the office. (Well, Kato may have something to say about that as well.)

Overwatch's Mercy Is Getting Massive Changes

Overwatch's Mercy Is Getting Massive Changes

Game director Jeff Kaplan issued a developer update today targeting popular support hero and fan-favorite Mercy. Kaplan's comments address how Mercy is played and how they are changing her character.

Mercy's signature ultimate ability that allows her to bring characters back to life is becoming her second ability and changing completely - it's now single target only, and on a cooldown.

Mercy's new ultimate is Valkyrie, which does "a lot of things." When Valkyrie is activated, Mercy can fly, real flying, not boosting or floating. Mercy's entire kit is enhanced when Valkyrie is activated, so you can chain beams to multiple targets to heal them or boost their damage, and her gun also hits harder and shoots faster.

Latest GTA Online Expansion, Smuggler's Run, Pays Homage To Rockstar's Past

Back in the early days of the PlayStation 2, Rockstar published an action game called Smuggler's Run centered around smuggling cargo through hot zones in assorted vehicles. The game proved successful, earning a spot on the PS2 Greatest Hits roster. After Smuggler's Run sequel and the creation of Midnight Club, Take-Two acquired the developer, Angel Studios. Rebranded Rockstar San Diego, the studio continued to flourish with many more great Midnight Club installments and the best game of the last console generation, Red Dead Redemption. Rockstar pays homage to this history with the latest expansion coming to Grand Theft Auto Online, appropriately called Smuggler's Run.

Trevor's associate Nervous Ron wants to expand his smuggling empire, but to do so he needs your help. Smuggler's Run centers around air trafficking, introducing new planes, helicopters, and ultralights for you to transport contraband across Los Santos and Blaine County. These new aircraft are customizable, and new aircraft hangers give you a place to set up your latest criminal endeavor. Nervous Ron will show you the ropes, and a mechanic named Charlie will keep your aircraft in tip-top shape.

Former Game Informer Editor Michael Futter Publishes Gamedev Business Handbook

Getting a game studio off the ground is no small feat. Outside of hiring developers and executing on the game design, studios must navigate the tricky back channels of publisher relationships and deal with unexpected budget roadblocks.

To help other fledgling developers get a leg up on this often confounding process, developer Mike Bithell (Thomas Was Alone, Volume: Coda) is publishing The GameDev Business Handbook written by former Game Informer news editor Michael Futter. To research this complex issue, Futter interviewed more than 25 developers, publishers, and industry professionals.

“I am incredibly proud to help bring Michael Futter’s work to game developers,” Bithell said in a press release. “One of the great privileges of running a slightly pretentiously self titled company, is having the power to make things you hoped had existed on your way up exist. I wish I’d had access to the insights and structure that this book lays out. I’m excited to see how the world reacts to what’s been created here."
