Madden Rules, Grand Theft Auto V Destroys, And Uncharted Hangs Out In August Game Sales

The NPD Group, which tracks and publishes retail sales numbers, has released their numbers for the month of August 2017 and Madden has unsurprisingly ruled over every other game.

The big story, however, is that Grand Theft Auto V is above just about everything else, 49 months after release. We are not talking about small hitters here. Grand Theft Auto V is beating out every single Switch game, Uncharted: Lost Legacy, and, well, pretty much every other game out in August.

The sales of Grand Theft Auto V set records when it came out. It is destroying records now.

The Internet Is Going Nuts For Shirtless Mario

The Internet Is Going Nuts For Shirtless Mario

There was a Nintendo Direct yesterday that included footage of Super Mario Odyssey, which you can find a write-up for right here. It also included a brief snippet of Mario in swimming trunks on the beach. For a guy who went on vacation to a tropical island before and, at his most casual, wore a Hawaiian shirt and sunglasses, it was kind of shocking to see Mario shirtless.

It was perhaps more shocking to see that the happy-go-lucky cartoon character has nipples.

First, there were the lore theorists at work.

Online Viewership For Esports Surges Among Millennials

Online Viewership For Esports Surges Among Millennials

A recent study conducted by Limelight Networks has found that millennials are viewing esports online in greater numbers, with the numbers of 18-25 year olds watching esports over other content increasing.

The study polled five hundred people of various ages in Europe, South and Southeast Asia, and the United States to study their content consumption in online video. In the age breakdown of the results, it is revealed that millennials prefer to watch esports online even over regular sports, though the accessibility (or lack thereof) of physical professional sports online muddies that comparison up quite a bit. While esports can be easily found free on Twitch with voluntary donations, something like the NFL Sunday Ticket costs $280 for four months, so popularity and desire to watch are unlikely to be the sole motivators for that choice.

The numbers are encouraging for esports, however, and with over five million viewers watching EVO's finals this year, esports is quickly becoming more than just an online thing. You can find a link to the full study below.

There Is An Overwatch Free Weekend On All Platforms Later This Month

Blizzard has announced that Overwatch will have a free weekend on September 22 through September 25 on all platforms.

During a free weekend, players have access to the entire game with more or less no limitations during the time period. So people still on the fence can try out the different modes and new characters for the game or see if it has changed more to your liking since the initial release.

The last free weekend for Overwatch was in May, so they do not come often. If you're interested in trying the game out, this is a good opportunity to do so.

Telltale Names Pete Hawley From Zynga As New CEO

Telltale Games, creators of narrative-driven licensed games like The Walking Dead, Tales From the Borderlands, and Batman, have installed Pete Hawley of Zynga as the new CEO of the company.

Hawley acted as senior vice president and general manager of games at Zynga. He is being brought in to succeed Dan Connors, who co-founded the company in 2004. Connors stepped down as CEO in 2015 and had co-founder Kevin Bruner take over, but it switched back to Connors six months ago, apparently temporarily.

It remains to be seen what, if any, changes Hawley will make to the structure of Telltale, but the studio has undergone significant expansion in the last five years already. Telltale currently has several ongoing series, including Minecraft Story Mode, Batman, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Walking Dead, with future games in series like The Wolf Among Us already announced.

Ghost Recon Wildlands' PVP Mode Enters Open Beta Next Week

Better late than never, Ghost Recon Wildlands' competitive multiplayer mode is nearly ready for prime time. From September 21 to 25, players will get to experience the new 4v4 mode via brief beta ahead of the final release.

Called Ghost War, the PvP mode is a class-based deathmatch affair featuring 12 unique character archetypes. For the beta, players can use the Assault, Marksman, and Support roles. Unlike a lot of deathmatch games, Ghost War embraces large expanses. All five maps give players varied terrain and dynamic weather to use to their advantage and get the jump on the other squad.
