Game Developers Conference Talks Like God Of War, Spider-Man, And Devil May Cry 5 Now Available Online

The Game Developer's Conference took place in San Francisco just a few weeks ago, bringing together the industry's most revered, impressive, and upcoming talent to the Moscone Convention Center to give talks to other developers about their design processes and just plain tell stories about the trenches. Some of these developers are from big budget games like God of War and Spider-Man while there's mobile hits like Pokemon Go and upcoming indie titles like Afterparty with talks, as well.

You can access the GDC vault right here.

From the panels we attended, we definitely recommend A Technical Postmortem of Spider-Man with Elan Ruskin, a post-mortem of Devil May Cry 5 with Hideaki Itsuno (beware if you haven't beaten the game, Itsuno starts with the final scene and keeps going from there), Cory Barlog's fantastic God of War talk where he relates the story of the game's reveal, how Tetris Effect became the game it is, and way more than we can list here.

Rumor: Xbox Live Gold And Gamepass Will Be Sold As Monthly Bundle

Rumor: Xbox Live Gold And Gamepass Will Be Sold As Monthly Bundle

Rumors have been swirling today from various well-connected sources saying that Microsoft is going to soon introduce a combined subscription for Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass. This combination would bundle both of the Xbox's fairly essential services into one subscription service.

The rumor comes first from known leaker hoXod on Twitter, who pegged the combined bundle at $14.99. Thurott and then later The Verge then came out to confirm that their sources have indicated the same thing. For month-to-month users, that works out to a $5 savings. For everyone else, it's not really much of a savings, but is likely more convenient for the end user.

For Microsoft, this is likely the best way to get players hesitant to subscribe to Game Pass for longterm periods to stay subscribed. While there has been a bevvy of free trials and what one might describe as Game Pass-ideal titles that have boosted numbers, maintained subscriptions have been a lot more difficult. When it is tied to online multiplayer access, people might be more willing to pony up the extra cash per month.

Fortnite Adding Respawn Vans In Next Update

Fortnite Adding Respawn Vans In Next Update

You can say a lot about Epic and Fortnite but you can't say they're slow to react. When there's an advancement in the battle royale genre, Epic makes no bones about taking what works in those games and applying them to Fortnite. That probably explains the newest update to Fortnite, which adds Apex Legends' (and some other battle royale games') respawn mechanic to Fortnite Battle Royale.

Dubbed "the Reboot Van," the new feature has the same function as beacons from Apex Legends. When someone on your squad bites it, you can collect their reboot card alongside their loot. Cash the reboot card in at a reboot van to bring said squadmate back. But it's a van, so very different.

Epic has made some Fortnite-style tweaks, to be fair. Using the van causes the alarms to go off, alerting anyone nearby. Whoever's not nearby will see shafts of light erupt from the area, telling everyone how many people are being revived. It's a risk to use, because it's basically holding up a flashing sign telling everyone to come take you out.

Report: Next Assassin's Creed Will Center Around Vikings

Report: Next Assassin's Creed Will Center Around Vikings

Ubisoft occasionally likes to tease upcoming projects in their released games and slowly just wait for people to figure it out. This seems to be the case with The Division 2, which featured posters of a viking since release. YouTuber JoRaptor noticed that the posters contained something a lot more identifying, however: the Apple of Eden, Assassin's Creed series-spanning maguffin with magic powers. This hints at a new Assassin's Creed game set in the cold Norse waters, but Kotaku has gone ahead to chime in with their own sources to confirm it.

A viking game makes sense with the current direction of the series, which focuses more on action RPG combat, character builds, and lots of boats. In that sense, a viking game flows well from what Assassin's Creed Odyssey established with its Grecian theme and structure last year. With the Apple of Eden playing a part in the poster, it seems likely the First Civilization treasure will have something to do with the game's story.

You Can Now Watch The For Honor Documentary, Playing Hard, On Netflix

If you’re a fan of video game documentaries, Netflix has your Friday night covered. Playing Hard is a full-length documentary that follows the years-long development of For Honor, Ubisoft’s knights-versus-vikings-versus-samurai action game. And unlike the plethora of behind-the-scenes dev diaries that studios offer fans these days, Playing Hard isn’t just a marketing ploy; the movie was made by independent film maker Jean-Simon Chartier, who had to fight with Ubisoft halfway through the game’s development to retain unfettered access to the studio. As such, the film doesn’t shy away from the production problems and clashing personalities that go into creating a triple-A video game, which you can get a hint of in the trailer below.

We were impressed by the passion and larger-than-life personality of For Honor's creative director, Jason VandenBerghe, when we spoke to him on The G.I. Show, and we're sure he has plenty of interesting things to say in the documentary as well. Playing Hard is available now to all Netflix subscribers.

Super Mario Odyssey And Breath Of The Wild Getting VR Modes Via Labo

Super Mario Odyssey And Breath Of The Wild Getting VR Modes Via Labo

A few weeks back, Nintendo announced the surprise Labo VR, a homemade VR kit that puts a Switch in a cardboard visor and allows it to act as a headset. While Nintendo's been fairly quiet about it since announcement, especially considering it comes out in just a matter of weeks, they have just announced that traditional games will also support VR modes; namely, Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

While the trailer is a little unclear, it appears Super Mario Odyssey is just some VR modes and minigames, like note collection. With the seeming lack of a headstrap, Nintendo clearly doesn't want players spending too long inside the cardboard VR world. Zelda, however...it is not obvious how that game is supporting VR. It seems to just be a visor for the actual gameplay that relegates camera control to head movement.

Prince Harry Calls To Ban Fortnite

Prince Harry Calls To Ban Fortnite

There's a number of people that really dislike Fortnite for whatever reason and that's fine, but there's disliking Fortnite and there's giving a prepared speech where you call for it to be banned. That's exactly what the Duke of Sussex and sixth in the line of succession for the British throne did at a YMCA event in London.

"It shouldn't be allowed," Harry told the crowd, referring to Fortnite. "Where is the benefit of having it in your household? It's created to addict, an addiction to keep you in front of a computer for as long as possible and it's so irresponsible. It's like waiting for the damage to be done and kids turning up on your doorsteps and families being broken down."

It is unknown to whom Prince Harry is requesting Fortnite be banned.

Super Meat Boy Forever Will Miss April Release Date

Super Meat Boy Forever, the runner-based follow-up to Super Meat Boy which has long been in development, will be held back just a little bit longer. Team Meat has announced that the game won't be making its targeted April release date.

The news comes from a tweet made by the developers today making a somewhat apologetic but mostly explanatory statement about the delay.

Mike Tyson Thinks There's A New Punch-Out And Is Not Happy

Mike Tyson Thinks There's A New Punch-Out And Is Not Happy

When writing news, I often have to fight the urge to start some stories with the words "for some reason," but there's times where it's extremely warranted. For some reason, Mike Tyson has said he has heard about a new Punch-Out game, and is upset that Nintendo has not contacted him about it.

heard @Nintendo was doing the new “Punch Out” without even contacting me. it wont be the same. my knockouts made the game. thats whack.

To be clear, Nintendo has not announced a new Punch-Out game, so if one exists, Mike Tyson has leaked one without it actually being announced. But then you kind of have to ask yourself: why on Earth would Mike Tyson know about a new Punch-Out game? Tyson has not been involved with the series since Punch-Out on the NES relaunched without him, replacing his name in the title and his boss fight at the end of the game. While the popular theory is that Tyson's criminal conviction for rape was the reason for this change, replacing Tyson with Mr. Dream was done two years before said conviction, and it was most likely a contract issue at the time.
