Former BioWare Developer Says EA Is Moving Toward Open World, Microtransaction Focus

A former BioWare gameplay designer gave his input on the closure of Visceral Games and EA's new development focus in a recent podcast.

In the latest episode of Waypoint's podcast, Manveer Heir painted a grim picture for future single-player titles. Speaking from his experience designing Mass Effect 3's multiplayer, he points to EA's microtransaction aftermarket strategy as a key driver for their recent and current projects.

"Why do you care about that at EA? The reason you care about that is because of microtransactions: buying card packs in the Mass Effect games, the multiplayer," he says. "It's the same reason we added card packs to Mass Effect 3: how do you get people to keep coming back to a thing instead of 'just' playing for 60 to 100 hours?"

The Laser League Closed Beta Starts This Weekend

Proving that every sport is better with lasers, Roll 7's fast-paced competitive arcade game gets its "Field Test" this weekend. Laser League pits two teams against one another in a Tron-meets-dodgeball game based around avoiding enemy lasers and eliminating opposing players. Players can choose from several different classes with special abilities, like a fast dash or the ability to turn enemy lasers against them.

The closed beta, which runs on Steam from Friday ,October 27 to Sunday, October 29, features 3v3 matches on a few of the game's maps. The test is invite-only, so hurry up and go here to make sure you'll be engaging in some neon laser action this weekend.

We had a chance to check out an early build of Laser League at E3 this year, and came away pretty impressed. For more of our thoughts on Laser League, which made it into our 2017 E3 Hot 50 List, click here.

The HD retro gaming console Super Nt offers a never before seen version of one of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System's best run-and-gun games.

In a recent press release, Analogue revealed that a full, uncut version of the Factor 5 game Super Turrican is being included in its upcoming HD remodel of the Super Nintendo. Originally cut down by 33 percent of its file size for its 1993 release, the director's cut version offers the complete version of the game never before seen by the public. The version also offers a new level with new music and improved sound design, more enemies, new uses for the beam weapon, and enhanced graphics.

Analogue released a new trailer for the director's cut, which can be viewed down below, but be warned: The safety notice at the beginning isn't a joke.

Microsoft Announces Mixer Integration Within Minecraft

Microsoft Announces Mixer Integration Within Minecraft

Mixer, formerly known as Beam before its acquisition by Microsoft, and Minecraft, Microsoft's most recent and expensive acquisition, are joining forces for a new level of integration.

With Mixer, Minecraft streamers can now integrate any command in the game into their stream for viewers to hit at their leisure. Want your viewers to summon zombie archers? It's a click away. Want them to summon creepers, for that matter? I wouldn't recommend it, but it's your stream, and Mixer's now letting you do it. This is similar to the Twitch integration in some games that allows people to cheer to rally a main character's health, but at a much more granular and fundamental level.

The process will start working with Minecraft on PC and Android, and will come to Xbox One later this week. All versions of Minecraft that support Mixer will be getting it once it exits beta, including Minecraft VR.
