Analysis: The Press Conferences Of E3 2014

The press conferences that kick off E3 allow companies to set the tone of the show, highlighting new games, services, and generally getting gamers excited. Sometimes these events go very well, and other times they are horrible disasters. How does this year stack up? Well, it certainly won't live in infamy, but it also didn't drop any jaws.

Despite a flood of news and trailers, no one company wiped the floor with the others this year. Everyone had solid, steady showings with a mix of sequels, new IP, and surprises. Of course, each one was good in different ways and for different reasons, and we have the full breakdowns for each one.

Microsoft opened its show saying that games would be the focus, and it kept that promise. We didn't have to watch any painful Kinect demos or listen to anyone drone on about sports and TV. Instead, we got to see big names like Assassin's Creed: Unity and Evolve in action. We also got introduced to some new projects like the Phantom Dust reboot and a new Crackdown. That's just scratching the surface, though. For the full story, read Mike Futter's analysis, plus a conversation between GI editors Matt Miller and Ben Reeves. You should also watch our video recap with Jeff Cork and Tim Turi.

Smash Running Cuccos In Super Smash Bros. On 3DS

Editors Jeff Cork and Kyle Hilliard recently got a chance to spend some time with the upcoming 3DS version of Super Smash Bros., and they’re sharing their thoughts in a discussion format.

Kyle: Hey Jeff! We played Super Smash Bros. on 3DS.

Jeff: Great intro, Kyle! Yes, we did play Super Smash Bros. on 3DS. A lesser person would simply reply, “What did you think, Kyle?” but I’m going to try and advance this thing as effectively as possible!

A Candid Conversation On Microsoft’s E3 Showcase

After the big day of press conferences today, a few of the Game Informer editors had the chance to dig in and explore a number of the games that Microsoft showed earlier that morning at their media briefing. Ben Reeves and I were among those with the good fortune to dig into several of those games, and we’ve here to offer a quick recap and conversation about what we saw.

Miller: That was a lot of games, tonight. Any favorites stand out for you?

Ben: It’s all kind of a blur of leopard pants and Nathan Fillion cutting in front of me at the Halo demo at this point, but I remember playing Sunset Overdrive fairly clearly. I’m not sure I loved it. Did you play it?
