Kim’s Niche Picks From E3

Kim’s Niche Picks From E3

I’ve always been a fan of weird and niche Japanese games, and I love alerting people to interesting titles that they may overlook. Therefore, I scoured the E3 show floor for the hidden gems amongst all the chaos. These are ones you should keep an eye on.

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (PlayStation Vita)

The killer bear is back! Last year’s Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc took fans by surprise with its quirky characters and twisted premise. Students were locked in a school with only one way out: murder. This September, we’re receiving a sequel, Goodbye Despair. The ending of the first game left plenty of unanswered questions, so seeing how the sequel handles them should be interesting. Goodbye Despair also offers a completely new venue: a tropical island featuring a new cast. Expect some returning members though, like Byakuya, who’s put on more than a few pounds. Goodbye Despair appears to have a lot of what we loved in the first game, but also refined many elements along with adding new mingames.

Test Chamber – Dead Rising 3: Super Ultra Arcade Remix Hyper Edition EX + α

Microsoft announced the latest Dead Rising 3 DLC at its E3 press conference. Dead Rising 3: Super Ultra Arcade Remix Hyper Edition EX + α is a departure from the game's earlier downloads, offering arcade action over story-propelling missions. Join Tim Turi, Andrew Reiner, and me as we plow through some zombies and show off a few of the game's Capcom references.

There's plenty of fan service in this download, with references to games like Strider, Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, and more. Watch our latest Test Chamber below to see Frank West take on the DLC's opening stages. Zombies, cars, and garage doors don't stand a change against Frank West's awesome attacks.

The Games That Missed E3

The Games That Missed E3

E3 2014 was loaded with games, games, and more games. But with every annual iteration that goes by, there are some games people were hoping to see more of that don't make it to the show. Plenty of highly anticipated titles technically appeared at the show in some form, be it a teaser trailer or even a brief mention of the game's existence (see EA's press conference for plenty of examples). The following list covers the games that didn't show up at E3 in any form. Some of them have been shown before. Some have simply been announced. And some series are just due for a new entry.

Game Informer's Best Of E3 2014 Awards

E3 2014 might have lacked the exciting hardware debuts and surprise game reveals of the past few years, but there was no shortage of amazing games playable on the show floor. Titles like Batman: Arkham Knight and Assassin’s Creed Unity finally demonstrated what the new-gen systems are capable of, while games like Destiny and Evolve provided more tantalizing glimpses into the future of multiplayer gaming. Here are our E3 2014 Best in Show Awards.

BATMAN: ARKHAM KNIGHT

Rocksteady’s final entry in the Arkham series is built from the ground up for new-gen consoles, and it shows. Our hands-on demo wowed us with crisp visuals, a massive open world, and seamless gameplay integration of the Batmobile that makes driving the super-powered vehicle as fun as we dreamed it would be. Mix in the smooth, combo-centric combat that has come to define the brawler genre in recent years, and it’s no surprise that the Caped Crusader won our Best Action award for the second year in a row.

Looking Ahead To The Games Of 2015

Whether part of an intended schedule or due to a delay, the games of 2015 are looking good. We’ve compiled a list of next year’s games, so you know what the future looks like for your platform of choice.

We’ll be updating this list throughout the rest of 2014, so check back with us as your future backlog begins to pile up. We're being conservative about some of the titles that were shown without gameplay, so if you see something you think should be on the list, let us know. We'll check back in and keep the conversation going.

Batman: Arkham Knight (Xbox One, PS4, PC) - 2015Rocksteady is donning cape and cowl for one last go at the Arkham series. This final title in the series will be on PC and new-gen hardware only, so if you want to see who is under the Arkham Knight’s mask (no, the title doesn’t refer to Batman), you’ll have to upgrade.
